HOURLY RANGE: $42.050 - $53.044
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves supervising and performing multiple tests or examinations on patient specimens in a clinical laboratory using defined procedures to aid in the diagnosis or treatment of patients at Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). This class differs from that of Clinical Laboratory Technologist by virtue of its supervisory responsibilities and performance of more difficult and complex laboratory tests. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief Clinical Laboratory Technologist for the assigned clinical section. Supervision is exercised over lower-level technical employees. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Supervises and performs a number of routine and special tests according to established procedures in two or more clinical laboratory sections: Biochemistry, Blood Bank, Hematology and/or Microbiology/Diagnostic Immunology;
Performs more difficult and complex tests and examinations according to established procedures in two or more clinical laboratory sections;
Evaluates and interprets laboratory test data as to necessity for further process of specimens utilizing laboratory information system (LIS);
Performs quality control as needed to ensure accuracy of instrument function and appropriateness of reagents used in patient testing;
Investigates quality control problems that cannot be fixed by lower-level staff; determines and performs such fixes;
Assists with research and developmental/special studies;
Maintains equipment and supplies of section(s);
Maintains records of sections(s) and prepares reports;
Performs other activities that contribute to patient care and/or maintenance of compliance with various regulations;
Supervises lower-level staff by making assignments, reviewing and evaluating work performance;
Supervises making of solutions and reagents, setting up of equipment and maintenance of equipment and supplies;
Assists in the education and training of technical personnel and students through demonstrating procedures, overseeing work practice and evaluating progress;
Keeps abreast of latest developments in the field;
Collects specimens from patients, which may include phlebotomy.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of principles, practices, techniques, terminology and equipment as applied to a clinical laboratory; good knowledge of quality control and quality assurance procedures as applied to a clinical laboratory including verification and validation procedures; good knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, accreditation standards and ECMCC policies and procedures as they relate to a clinical laboratory; good knowledge of laboratory and hospital information systems; ability to perform difficult and complex clinical laboratory work with a high degree of accuracy; ability to exercise safety precautions in handling infections and biologically active specimens and in using clinical laboratory equipment; ability to supervise and train others; ability to maintain accurate records of test results and prepare clinical laboratory reports; ability to make minor repairs and maintain clinical laboratory equipment; ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions; ability to analyze and interpret clinical laboratory findings, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse constituency; ability to utilize a variety of electronic software applications; sound professional judgment; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist as issued by the New York State Education Department at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- ) Possession of a Master's Degree* in Clinical Laboratory Technology, Medical Technology or related title that meets the standards set forth in Title 8, Article 165 of New York State's Education Law and Subpart 79-13 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education and two (2) years' experience in the clinical laboratory section for which appointment is sought; or:
- Possession of a Bachelor's Degree* in Clinical Laboratory Technology, Medical Technology or related title that meets the standards set forth in Title 8, Article 165 of New York State's Education Law and Subpart 79-13 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education and four (4) years of technical clinical laboratory experience (in accordance with New York Code, Rules and Regulations, Title 10, Part 58-1.4)*, of which two (2) years were in the clinical laboratory section for which appointment is sought; or:
- Possession of a license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist as issued by the New York State Education Department and four (4) years of technical clinical laboratory experience (in accordance with New York Code, Rules and Regulations, Title 10, Part 58-1.4), of which two (2) years were in the clinical laboratory section for which appointment is sought.
