OPH Chief Resident Ay25/26 July 1, 2025- June 30, 2026
Job Summary
OPH Chief Resident and Director of the OPH Trauma Service
Qualifications
General Supervision and Teaching: You will function as an important resource person, teaching and assisting residents in surgical procedures. The chief resident is responsible for organizing, making, and managing the residents' schedules, including the rotation schedule and order, coordinating vacation schedules, etc. Trauma Service/Resident Continuity Clinic: You will direct the care of patients in the Trauma Service, which includes both Trauma patients and other patients scheduled by you or residents per your approval. You will direct this care with the assistance of the residents, making use of subspecialty services for consults as appropriate, and will serve as a Trauma Service consultant in the Comprehensive Ophthalmology Service, Emergency Department, and other subspecialty clinics. Patients seeking urgent follow-up service may be scheduled in your available Trauma Service appointment slots. In addition, you will cover eye trauma in the Longwood Medical Area. Trauma Call Schedule: You will maintain and manage the Trauma call coverage schedules and direct payment of appropriate compensation to participants in accordance with departmental policies. The Chief's office will provide a list of participating physicians at MEE willing to provide Chief Resident/Eye Trauma Service coverage before the beginning of the academic year and will ask for their commitment to and flexibility in participating in the coverage. Surgical Teaching: You will teach and supervise residents in performance of cataract and pterygia surgery. Teaching and Inpatient Rounds: The Chief Resident traditionally conducts teaching rounds on most days of the week; it is expected that you will continue such daily teaching activity. You will round with the senior residents on their post-operative patients. Medical Student Teaching: Because of your Harvard Medical School appointment, we expect you to participate in teaching medical students who rotate through Mass Eye and Ear. Committee Responsibilities: You will serve on the department's Residency Steering Committee, Clinical Competency Committee, Education and Events Committees, and Mass Eye and Ear's Graduate Medical Education Committee, as well as coordinate interfacing activities between the residency and fellowship components of the department. Staff Conferences: You will work with Ophthalmic Education to coordinate the scheduling of Grand Rounds, arranging resident case presentations as well as discussions and/or discussions by staff members or visiting faculty. You will work with faculty to moderate such conferences. You will coordinate the Friday Lecture schedule. In conjunction with your committee responsibilities above, you will be a participant in planning and executing the Residents' Course, and the Chandler and Friedman lectures, as appropriate. Miscellaneous Activities: You may, from time to time, assist the Chief of Ophthalmology and/or Director of the Residency Program with specific projects relating to ophthalmic education, training, and general departmental administration. You will work with leadership and faculty to enhance the relationship between MEE and Massachusetts General Hospital residents, fellows and attending physicians through lectures, consultations, and other means you may see fit.Default Job Description
