The primary purpose of the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) is to assess, plan, implement and coordinate the clinical care program in conjunction with the Director of Nursing Services to ensure the highest quality of care is maintained at all times. The ADON will also supervise the day-to-day nursing activities in accordance to compliance with current Federal, State, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern our facility as well as responsible to support, mentor and empower the nursing staff according to the nurse practice act. The ADON works as the interim DON (Director of Nursing) in the absence of the DON.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and currently registered with the State of Board Examiners for Registered Nurses. Current CPR certification.
- Registered Nurse with minimum of two (2) years' experience in nursing supervisory or nursing management in a long-term care setting or equivalent.
- Other Skills and Abilities Required:
- Demonstrates knowledge of gerontology, rehabilitative, and medical-surgical nursing care, Antibiotic Stewardship, Infection Prevention and Infection Control
- Ability to effectively manage staff, act as a team player and serve as a resource to staff.
- Knowledge of State and Federal regulatory requirements for long-term care.
- Ability to work with other disciplines as a team player. Knowledge of RAI process, and Clinical Reimbursement including Medicare A, B & D case mix - or willingness to learn.
- Understanding of current Infection Prevention and Control and OSHA guidelines.
- Knowledge of QAA/QAPI theory and process.
- Ability to prioritize and complete assigned duties within a constantly changing environment.
- Knowledge of long-term care requirements for documentation, communication system(s) to address resident condition changes.
- Professional attitude, high degree of self-motivation and leadership qualities.
- Customer service oriented with knowledge of successful customer service techniques.
- Understanding of corporate compliance, and abuse prohibition.
- Able to communicate and work effectively with various levels of staff, residents, family members, the public and representatives of various regulatory agencies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Nursing Care Functions:
- Ensures VOA care clinical systems are followed/utilized. Reaches out to VOANS Clinical Consultants with issues regarding the systems.
- Directs and oversees day-to-day functions of the nursing staff and nurse managers to ensure compliance with current rules, regulations and guidelines that govern this long-term care facility.
- Participate in the development, maintenance and updating of written policies and procedures that govern the daily function of the department.
- Provide leadership that includes the administrative and supervisory principles essential for your assigned Staff Nurses and other staff.
- Make daily rounds on the assigned unit to assure that nursing service personnel are performing required duties and to assure that appropriate nursing care is being provided.
- Participate in surveys and inspections made by authorized agencies.
- Meet with the nursing staff (professional/non-professional) as well as support personnel in planning the department's services, programs and activities.
- Coordinate "house" activities when assigned, in the absence of the Director of Nursing to include calls to residential sections of the facility and coordination of staffing assignments
- Assist with reviewing Abuse/Neglect claims and aid with abuse prevention investigations as necessary.
- Provide support to the facility by working on-call as directed by the Director of Nursing.
- Can be assigned duties of oversight of Staff Development, QAA/QAPI process, Infection Prevention and Control, and MDS and as directed by the DON.
- Care Plan and Assessment Function:
- Review resident care plans for appropriate resident goals, problems, approaches and revisions based on nursing needs.
- Determine and authorize use of chemical restraints and physical devices when necessary and in accordance with facility policy.
- Assist in monitoring and assessing residents.
- Committee Functions:
- Serve on, participate in and attend various committee meetings of the facility to which you are assigned (i.e. Antibiotic Stewardship, Infection Prevention and Control, Quality Assurance, IDT, Risk Management, Chemical Restraints, Physical Devices, Wound Care Rounds, Safety Committee etc.).
- Personnel Functions:
- Assist with the coordination of staffing patterns, productive nursing hours and worker's compensation as directed.
- Provides input for employee's performance evaluations and disciplinary actions as assigned by the Director of Nursing Services.
- Coordinates and conducts routine nursing staff meetings in conjunction with the Director of Nursing Services.
- Ensure that disciplinary action is administered fairly and without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, age, sex, religion or handicap.
- Attends required in-services & completes assigned online modules.
- Staff Development:
- Assist the Education Director in identifying educational and ongoing training needs.
- Environment, Safety & Sanitation:
- Assist in developing safety standards for the Nursing Service department.
- Monitor nursing service personnel to assure they are following established safety regulations in the use of equipment/supplies.
- Develop and implement procedures for the safe operation, Antibiotic Stewardship, Infection Prevention and Infection Control for the Nursing Service department.
- Accept and intervene with exposure to odors, noise, and toxic/infectious substances as needed.
- Organizes and administers the delivery of nursing services and related ancillary services.
- Analyzes and evaluates nursing care and related ancillary and therapeutic services rendered to improve quality of resident care and to plan the best utilization of staff time and activities.
- Works toward the resolution of resident and family concerns; advises Director of Nursing of any special problems relating to care delivery.
- Develops, monitors and maintains required and appropriate documentation on the residents' medical records, including a multi-disciplinary plan of care for all residents.
- Collaborates and consults with residents' attending physicians, Medical Director and outside consultants.
- Makes daily rounds to assess that quality care is being delivered to meet the residents' needs.
- Assists with implementing and maintaining nursing service objectives, philosophy and standards of nursing practice and follows established policies and procedures.
- Promotes harmonious relationships and favorable attitudes among the employees by direct intervention. Informs Director of Nursing of resolution of problem(s). Plans and works with all departments efficiently for the total care of residents.
- Directs, supervises and participates in implementing changes and activities to improve nursing service in collaboration with the Director of Nursing.
- Acts rapidly and effectively, following facility policies and procedures, and utilizes principles of management in any emergency situation.
- Assists Director of Nursing in interviewing applicants when required.
- Participates upon request in staff counseling/disciplinary actions.
- Maintains a comprehensive knowledge of State and Federal regulations.
- In the absence of the Director of Nursing, has administrative authority, responsibility and accountability for overseeing the daily operation of the nursing department in providing quality resident care.
- Non-Essential Functions:
- Assists with approved research project related to improving nursing care.
- Reviews level-of-care determinations with the staff nurses to obtain optimal reimbursement.
- Assists Staff Development in teaching, training/re-training nursing personnel as necessary.
- Serves as consultant in technical and professional matters for nursing personnel. Applies knowledge and skills of management in all areas.
- Informs Director of Nursing on reportable situations and nursing needs.
- Other duties as assigned.
