Responsibilities

The Occupational Safety & Industrial Hygiene Department is looking for a high performing individual with an attention to detail to join our team as a Scientist II (Data Scientist). This individual will be supporting multiple ongoing and planned projects for the NNSS.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide hazardous materials support to Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) employees, supervisors and managers in areas assigned. Assignments include but are not limited to performing review of requisitions for chemical purchases, utilize Maximo to create chemical records and enter chemicals into inventory system, perform inventories of storage locations, print chemical barcodes/RFID tags, and provide assistance as needed to shipping/receiving warehouse with barcoding/RFID tagging chemicals, inventory and performing routine verifications of chemical storage locations.
  • Other duties include performing Periodic Reviews of storage locations and providing feedback to facility personnel, Participate in Project Planning Meetings, Support operations and activities in maintaining chemical storage, compatibility, and conducting field inspections and other assessments to evaluate status; tracking deficiencies to closure; taking initiative to resolve problems or issues relating to compliance; reviewing planning and operational documents to ensure chemical requirements are incorporated.
  • Position involves developing and revising procedures relating to chemical safety; assisting with preparation and delivery of presentation on chemical safety; preparing reports for internal and external customers, coordinating recordkeeping by maintaining status of specialized documents, records, and files, performing administrative tasks of a specialized nature to research, analyze, and develop projects and assignments.
  • Good understanding of techniques of data management and visualization
  • Professional experience working with database systems, including tasks like designing database structures, writing queries, managing data integrity, optimizing performance, utilizing PowerBI.
  • Identifying trends in datasets, create data models and forecast outcomes. Communicate recommendations to the ES&H team.
  • Develop and maintain data models, dashboards, and reports to track workplace illness, injuries, safety compliance, and operational risks.
  • Conduct statistical analyses and predictive modeling to identify trends and recommend safety interventions.
  • Utilize machine learning and advanced analytics to enhance safety program effectiveness.
  • Integrate data from multiple sources to create a comprehensive dataset
  • Ability to multi-task, manage time, organize, and set priorities and make timely decisions
  • Responsibilities may extend to similar/related work as assigned by supervisor.
  • Position involves indoor work in an office setting and outdoor work in construction areas, activities in extreme temperatures, work in chemical protective clothing, work in construction areas including underground areas, and in nuclear facilities, and work with employees in all levels and professions.
  • Perform other duties assigned by Management.


Qualifications

Due to the nature of our work, US Citizenship is required for all positions.
  • Bachelor's degree in a calculus-based (STEM) field, plus at least 2 years' relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge. Graduate research experience may be recognized.
  • Bachelor's degree in a calculus-based (STEM) field, plus at least two years of experience with safe handling of chemicals, MSDS/SDS reviews, HAZCOM experience, ensuring regulatory compliance, performing reviews and assessments preferred.
  • Experience evaluating chemical for potential interaction, incompatibilities, and changes chemicals could undergo during project activities/storage preferred.
  • Certified Safety Professional preferred.
  • Planning/organizational skills and initiative, and use of independent judgment.
  • Working knowledge of office software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficient in Python, R, SQL, Power BI.
  • Experience with GPS/Telematics.
  • Knowledge of technical vocabularies and terminology common to the assignment.
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills with proficiency in composition, proofreading, and grammar.
  • Ability to function in a team environment.
  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

Ability to obtain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification credential under the Department of Energy Order 206.2, 'Identity, Credential, and Access Management,' and Supplemental Directive NNSA SD 206.2, 'Implementation of Personal Identity Verification for Uncleared Contractors.'

Annual salary range for this position is: $81,307.20 - $121,971.20.

Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
