MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
One (1) year of experience as a Clinical Chemist Supervisor I* or the equivalent in an approved clinical laboratory.**
* Clinical Chemist Supervisor I experience in the County of Los Angeles is defined as: Plans, organizes, directs and evaluates the technical and administrative operations of a clinical chemistry laboratory.
** An approved laboratory is defined as: A clinical laboratory that has a federal issued Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) Laboratory Certificate of Accreditation that authorizes the laboratory to accept human specimens for the purpose of performing laboratory examinations, and is accredited by the College of American Pathologist (CAP) or The Joint Commission.

Essential Job Functions
- Plans, develops, and implements appropriate administrative clinical chemistry practices, procedures, and programs for laboratories within a medical center to ensure the maintenance of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services-approved proficiency-testing program commensurate with services offered.
- Assists the Chief of Pathology in the formulation and development of policies for the laboratory and directs their implementation in the assigned area.
- Manages the establishment of a quality control program for testing performed, supervises the recommendation of new instrumentation and methodologies for clinical services, and designs.
- Leads all aspects of research to explore new biomarkers, improve existing assays, and contribute to scientific publications; cultivates the development and implementation of tests, and ensures reports include all information required for test interpretation.
- Designs, validates, and implements new laboratory tests to improve diagnostic accuracy by selecting appropriate reagents, calibrating instruments, and ensures the method meets regulatory and clinical standards.
- Oversees the monitoring of performance standards, quality control, and quality improvement, including tests referred to outside laboratories for quality control; develops quality assurance programs, conducts proficiency testing, and supervises trends in test accuracy to implement corrective action.
- Ensures laboratory adherence to evolving regulations, supervises preparation for inspections, audits and accreditation processes, and develops and maintains accurate documentation to meet compliance standards.
- Establishes parameters for acceptable analytic performance and assures that these levels are maintained throughout the testing process, from specimen receiving to result reporting.
- Participates in the recruitment and selection of staff, assigns and reviews the work of clinical chemist supervisors, evaluates the progress of clinical chemists, and counsels these employees in their self-development.
- Supervises the provision of educational programs; plans, researches, and develops trainings for the section; and designs and conducts instructional programs for clinical chemist and laboratory technologist trainees and pathology residents and interns.
- Directs and coordinates the determination of personnel, equipment, supply, space and facility needs, the translation of these needs into budgetary requests, and the development of written justification to support requests.
- Advises staff and promotes an understanding and awareness of clinical chemistry operations, the resolution of specific problem of diagnosis, and the reception of feedback on action taken to improve laboratory services for better patient care.
- Reviews patient results for accuracy, assesses references ranges, and consults physicians, pathologists and other medical professionals to recommend test selection, discuss result interpretation, and potential follow-up testing for patient diagnosis and treatment decisions.
- Provides consultation services regarding the medical significance of clinical chemistry laboratory data, including leadership and recommendations on standardization projects department-wide.
