RBC is internationally recognized for its commitment to innovation, diversity, customer satisfaction and corporate social responsibility.

The Director, Commercial Banking Financial Control will be responsible for leading, managing, and empowering a team of accounting and finance professionals, whilst managing the financial control and reporting responsibilities in the Wholesale Finance group with the objective of delivering timely, accurate and reliable financial information.

In addition to being responsible for financial and regulatory reporting, the Director will focus on maintaining a strong internal controls and governance framework within the team and function, analyzing and advising on key business transactions, and partnering and liaising with various business partners and stakeholders to conduct financial analysis and reporting for senior business leaders.

What will you do?

You are the Quarterback for Finance with respect to accounting issues, orchestrating relevant activities through functional partners to enable business transactions. As a result, you will:
  • Be responsible for accurate and complete financial and regulatory reporting for all supported business lines by reviewing monthly GL data, financial results and variances to ensure accuracy, including monitoring of allocations and other intergroup activities.
  • Be responsible to ensure new products and new transactions are appropriately captured in RBC financial reporting systems, and that appropriate accounting methodologies are applied. In particular, prepare analyses that take into account IFRS accounting implications and external and internal reporting requirements including MD&A, B/S, P&L, note disclosures & supplemental formats.
  • Streamline, simplify and automate the design and execution of internal controls and processes to ensure accuracy and timeliness of financial information.
  • Maintain technical knowledge and ensure Financial Control, Product Control, and Front Office teams are kept abreast of all new accounting developments.
  • Independently manage, coordinate (with Front Office/Business, other Finance groups and Accounting Policy), and execute operational implementations of new accounting and regulatory standards.
  • Manage and represent Finance function on platform/global IT system projects/initiatives.
  • Ensure SOX and RBC EUDA documentation compliance and completeness including new controls/processes.
  • Participate in ad-hoc projects as directed by Senior Management.
  • Lead a high-performing team towards the achievement of our key objectives, including being a value-add advisor to business partners, creating and upholding an excellent controls environment, and engineering engaging experiences.

Control and governance over the financial position and performance of the business and flawless execution of close processes -- including review of financial and regulatory submissions (e.g., journal entries, templates) -- is fundamental to your role. You will:

  • Manage the monthly Global Attestation review program to ensure proper financial controls supporting external financial results are in place.
  • Ensure that global policies and procedures are adhered to by all stakeholders, including Product Control, Operations, and Head Office Financial and Regulatory Reporting.
  • Review and execute monthly, quarterly and annual financial close processes and attestations, ensuring the timely production of accurate financial and regulatory results and disclosures.
  • Manage internal and external auditor support, including review and development of SOX and other process documentation.
  • Provide SOX sign-offs to Senior Director on monthly financial results.

You will lead and develop a team of finance professionals by providing proper training, coaching, clear direction and expectations. Ensure employees understand RBC vision and purpose, as well as encourage targeted behaviours that align to RBC leadership model.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have
  • CPA designation or equivalent with 8+ years' of experience.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of financial reporting under IFRS accounting standards and internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Curiosity to explore better ways of working while maintaining a strong governance mindset, accompanied by a drive to take ownership for and resolve issues with a sense of urgency.
  • Technical mastery of relevant financial and regulatory accounting standards.
  • Highly developed communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills are considered necessary for the success of this role. Strong financial, analytical, judgmental and conceptual skills.
  • Detailed knowledge of complex financial instruments, financing, such as securitization and lending transactions.
  • Excellent presentation and report writing skills.
