Position Summary:
Sutter Health Park, home of the MiLB's Sacramento River Cats and the temporary host of the MLB's Athletics, is seeking an experienced and motivated Director of Field Operations. This individual will oversee all aspects of field management and maintenance to ensure a pristine playing surface for both Minor League Baseball (MiLB) and Major League Baseball (MLB) games, as well as other events hosted at the park. The Director will lead a team of grounds staff, manage resources and schedules, and uphold the highest standards of field performance and safety.

Primary Responsibilities:

Leadership and Management

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive maintenance program for the playing surface, including Kentucky Bluegrass maintenance, infield skin management, and irrigation.


  • Lead, mentor, and manage the field operations team, including seasonal staff and interns.


  • Oversee the recruitment, training, and development of team members, ensuring adherence to organizational policies and high-performance standards.


  • Conduct performance evaluations and manage disciplinary actions when necessary.


  • Collaborate with executive leadership to align field operations goals with organizational objectives.


Field Maintenance and Operations

  • Supervise the preparation and maintenance of the playing field to meet or exceed MLB and MiLB standards.


  • Coordinate and oversee all maintenance activities, including mowing, edging, irrigation repair, pest management, fertilization, and cultural practices.


  • Manage dirt areas (e.g., infield skin, pitcher's mound, home plate, bullpens) and artificial turf maintenance.


  • Ensure the proper use and maintenance of grounds equipment, including mowers, tractors, sprayers, and aerators.


  • Monitor and adjust field maintenance practices based on weather conditions, schedules, and usage demands.


Event Management

  • Plan and execute field preparations for professional and non-professional events, including concerts, graduations, and corporate field days.


  • Collaborate with event organizers to ensure field safety and optimal conditions for various activities.


  • Manage field operations for game-day events, including pre-game and post-game responsibilities, tarp pulls, and other necessary adjustments.


Administrative Duties

  • Develop and manage the field operations budget, including materials, equipment, and staffing expenses.


  • Maintain inventory of field maintenance supplies, including fertilizers, pesticides, and clay.


  • Ensure compliance with all safety and environmental regulations, including pesticide application certifications.


  • Provide regular reports on field conditions, maintenance schedules, and staffing needs.


Required Skills and Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Turfgrass Management, Horticulture, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.


  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing a professional baseball field, with MLB-level field management experience preferred.


  • Proven track record of managing a team of 5 or more individuals in a high-performance environment.


Technical Skills

  • Expertise in turfgrass management practices, including fertilization, irrigation, pest and disease identification, and equipment maintenance.


  • Strong understanding of in-field dirt management and repair techniques.


  • Familiarity with irrigation systems and ability to troubleshoot and repair as needed.


  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and other relevant software.


  • Ability to interpret weather data and make informed decisions regarding field playability.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and work in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind.


  • Capability to perform prolonged physical tasks, such as standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and climbing ladders.


  • Willingness to work long hours, weekends, and holidays, particularly during the baseball season.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) certification


  • Pesticide application certification or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire.


  • Experience maintaining Kentucky Bluegrass in high-end athletic field settings.


  • Strong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.


  • Familiarity with MLB and MiLB field standards and requirements.


Compensation:

The base salary range for this role is $80,000 - $85,000 plus potential for a performance-based annual bonus. Final offers for this role will be made within the parameters of the salary range provided. Years of experience, skills, and other factors are considered when determining the salary offered.
