Job Responsibilities
THIS IS AN INTERNAL POSTING FOR CURRENT SCHP OFFICERS ONLY.

This position serves: Abbeville, Cherokee, Chester, Chesterfield, Edgefield, Fairfield, Greenwood, Lancaster, Laurens, McCormick, Newberry, Saluda, Union and York Counties.
Enforces South Carolina motor vehicle insurance laws. Locates and confiscates all suspended vehicle tags assigned in his/her area as well as confiscating suspended driver's licenses. Required to enter the disposition of a suspended vehicle license and driver's license into the SCDMV Online/Phoenix program. Prepares and presents cases in court. Prepares and documents necessary reports on all Patrol activities. The Corporal is the direct supervisor of troopers assigned to his/her squad.
Performs required bi-monthly line inspections on subordinates' vehicles and equipment for cleanliness and operability. Checks subordinates' reports for accuracy, thoroughness and timeliness. The Corporal also monitors daily activity and provides guidance with reports as needed.

Locates and confiscates suspended vehicle license plates and/or driver's licenses for cancellation of liability insurance.

Assist local Troops with collision investigation and traffic control as needed. Assist with traffic control and enforcement during natural disasters.

Conducts interstate patrols, assists with disabled motorists, provides traffic control and enforcement during holidays and other special events.

Maintains knowledge of all laws governing the operations of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Provides and disseminates information to the public on vehicle laws; interprets safety rules for the general public.

Prepares and maintains, through required procedures, all daily, weekly and monthly reports concerning enforcement activities.

Develops sound working relationships with general public, other law enforcement agencies, courts and violators.

Properly maintains all equipment issued by the Department of Public Safety; responsible and accountable for handling public funds and performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
TIME IN GRADE - Must possess a minimum of five (5) years of Certified Law Enforcement Service Time and a minimum of six (6) months of continuous service as a SCHP Lance Corporal or currently hold the rank of SCHP Master Trooper by the posted closing date of vacancy.
EDUCATION - High school diploma or GED equivalency.
PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION - An applicant must have scored 70 or higher on a Promotional Examination for the vacancy rank within two years of the posted closing date of the vacancy.
PROMOTIONAL INTERVIEW PANEL - An applicant must have successfully completed a Promotional Interview Panel for the vacancy rank within two years of the posted closing date of the vacancy.
DISCIPLINARY ACTION - Any individual who is currently serving a suspension for disciplinary reasons or pending the outcome of an investigation shall be considered ineligible to participate in the promotion process. An involuntary demotion during the preceding 6 months of the vacancy closing shall be considered ineligible to participate in the promotion process.
EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - An individual who has received an "Unsuccessful Performance" rating on the employee's most recent performance evaluation or has received a "Warning Notice of Substandard Performance" during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the vacancy shall be ineligible to participate in the promotion process.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD - Any individual serving a one (1) year probationary period shall be ineligible to participate in the promotion process.

RESIDENCY - Selected applicant must comply with the residency guidelines outlined in SCDPS Policy #300.47 (Residency Requirements for Commissioned Law Enforcement Officers) within 4 months of the effective date of the promotion/reassignment. Section IV. D. 2. Personnel assigned to Specialized Units: Troopers assigned to a specialized Troop or Unit shall establish a residence within the Troop or Unit of their assigned area of responsibility or, if residing outside of the Troop or Unit of their assigned area of responsibility, at a location that will allow them to respond to the county in which their assigned Troop or Unit office is located within 45 minutes. IV.C. Troop/Unit/Commanders are responsible for determining compliance with this policy and shall approve or deny requests to reside outside of the area of assignment.

Preferred Qualifications
Enforce all traffic laws, especially pertaining to uninsured motor vehicles. Must have the capability and knowledge to operate a computer. The Corporal should have the ability to deal firmly but courteously with the general public and should have the ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations. These abilities include but are not limited to talking, walking, sitting, hearing, running, lifting, driving, wrestling and firing a weapon. The Corporal is the direct supervisor of troopers assigned to his/her squad.

The Corporal is under general supervision of the unit supervisor. Latitude is allowed for independent decision making concerning traffic matters. The Corporal is also responsible for troopers assigned to his/her squad and will provide them guidance on situations as they may occur.
Will work under adverse and hazardous conditions. Will work in heavy vehicular traffic. Will work in adverse weather conditions such as rain, snow, wind and ice. Overnight travel and lodging may be required on occasion.
