Shift: Flexible shifts, including 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM, 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM, or possibly 5:00 AM - 1:30 PM, Monday to Friday
Guaranteed Hours: Not specified
Experience: Minimum 1 year in a histology laboratory setting
License: Not specified
Certifications: Registry certification or eligibility at technician level preferred
Must-Have: High School Diploma with 2 years of work experience in a laboratory setting, or an Associate of Science degree with 1 year of experience in a histology laboratory
Job Description:
- Perform standard and specialized laboratory procedures to prepare tissue, biological materials, and body fluids for microscopic examination by pathologists.
- Collect and/or receive tissue, biological materials, and body fluids for processing.
- Assist in research procedures, label, and place specimens in appropriate containers using proper dehydrating, fixing, infiltrating, and paraffin solutions.
- Embed prepared specimens into paraffin blocks, use a microtome to cut tissue sections to specified thickness.
- Remove excess paraffin, mount tissue sections onto glass slides, and perform routine or special stains.
- Prepare stains and solutions following specific procedures in the procedure manual.
- Follow established safety policies and procedures.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure an adequate inventory of supplies by submitting requests to the supervisor.
- Keep accurate records, slide files, and tissue blocks as outlined in the procedure manual.
- Answer phone calls, handle requests for technical information, and refer detailed inquiries to a supervisor or pathologist when appropriate.
- Maintain a neat, clean, and orderly work area.
- Stay informed on new techniques, procedures, equipment, and instrumentation; assist in product evaluation and attend training programs and seminars when appropriate.
- Assist in the orientation and training of new personnel.
