Seeking generalist proficient in performing highly complex testing in all areas of the laboratory, including hematology, chemistry, & blood banking. Accurately performs & evaluates QC, performs preventative maintenance, troubleshoots equipment. Possess problem solving as well as people skills, Proficient at computer related programs. Interacts with other healthcare professionals in the interpretation of test results and problem solving.

JOB SUMMARY of ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Adheres to Hospital's Policies and Procedures and Philosophy of Care. Consistently exhibits professional conduct that is a behavior-based expression of the hospital's Standards of Excellence. Performs basic procedures and tests in all areas of the clinical laboratory and possibly higher testing in microbiology while maintaining established policies and procedures. Reviews and maintains quality control in the laboratory. Maintains instrumentation. Uses an understanding of principles of growth and development to assess each patient's needs/understanding of instruction and procedure.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:

Certified as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (formerly Medical Technologist) by: American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or American Medical Technologist (AMT), or National Certifying Agency (NCA), or Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW), or have a Bachelor's Degree in a Biological Science or Chemistry with proven proficiency in Laboratory science.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Effective written and oral communication skills, computer skills and organizational skills required. Equipment and instruments used, includes but are not limited to, standard microscopes, centrifuges, water baths, incubators, automated cell washers, blood bank refrigerators and freezers, automated instruments for hematology, coagulation and chemistry, and urinalysis instruments. Absolute integrity in the accurate performance and reporting of results. Ability to organize and prioritize workload. Demonstrates ability and desire to cooperate in laboratory program of specific specialty area and perform bench lead duties as assigned. Ability to analyze and interpret QC data and make necessary analyzer adjustments. Use of personal protective equipment as appropriate, documentation of immunization/immunity against hepatitis B, and training related to blood-borne pathogens is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS:

Adheres to all State and Federal regulations pertaining to hazardous materials and BBP. Hazards include risk of exposure to communicable disease, hazardous substances and risk of physical injury from lifting or operating electrical equipment.

WORK CONTACT GROUP: All hospital departments, patients, families, visitors, nursing personnel and medical staff.

SPECIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Moderate amounts of sitting, standing or walking; occasional light lifting up to 50 pounds. Fine motor coordination, clear speech, normal hearing and good visual acuity, including color perception.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TECHNICAL

1. Greets patient (family), visitors, physicians, hospital personnel in a respectful manner; gives department/name when answering telephone.

3. Determines acceptability of specimens (labeling, appropriateness of test ordered, etc.); resolves discrepancies.

4. Performs Specimen Status checks each shift and records date and time of checks.

5. Performs Urinalysis and Miscellaneous Procedures according to written policies and procedures.

6. Performs Blood Bank testing according to written policies and procedures.

7. Performs Chemistry and Special Chemistry testing following written policies and procedures.

8. Performs Hematology and Coagulation testing according to written policies and procedures.

9. Performs Bacteriology testing according to written policies and procedures.

10. Completes work assignments by prioritizing tasks, giving STAT requests highest priority and performing multiple tasks simultaneously in all bench area assignments.

11. Maintains appropriate amounts of reagents and supplies by performing scheduled inventory and observing expiration dates, and prepares reagents and quality control material as needed; checks in new supplies and places in designated storage locations, and notifies Section Supervisor when supplies or reagents need to be reordered.

12. Adheres to Hospital and Laboratory Infection Control, Employee Safety and Patient Safety policies and procedures. Maintains a clean and safe work environment.

13. Performs and documents maintenance on each instrument according to required schedule as defined at each bench assignment, and recognizes and troubleshoots instrumentation failures and documents corrective action taken; notifies appropriate persons when additional action outside one's expertise is required.

14. Performs, documents and evaluates required quality control procedures and documents corrective action taken or reason for accepting out-of-control results; notifies Bench Lead of any persistent problem or situation that requires additional action.

15. Participates in quality improvement activities including completion of QA forms identifying problems and adverse outcomes.

16. Verifies all results before reporting. Calls all "PANIC" values, records panic value calls in the "PANIC VALUES'' log. Records all verbal reports in the "COMMENT" field of the patient's LIS file. Request "Read Back" of all telephoned results.

17. Participates in training and orientation of new employees, and assumes responsibility for own competency and continuing education; reviews on a periodic basis all policy, procedure, and instrument manuals to ensure compliance and maintain current knowledge of procedures.

18. Assists physicians, nursing staff, technologists, clerical staff, phlebotomists and students in problem solving with regard to specimen or result inquiries.

19. Recognizes situations/results that need to be brought to the attention of Bench Lead, Director or Pathologist.

20. Performs additional tasks as requested.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between EvergreenHealth Monroe and United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), Local 3000.
