POSITION SUMMARY:

In collaboration with the Medical Physicist and Radiation Oncologist generates computerized radiation dose distributions and performs dose calculations. Keeps abreast of technology in the field and works with other programs, dosimetrists to establish quality, change effectiveness and productivity. Performs established procedures following hospital and department philosophy, policies and standards. Participates in continuous quality improvement activities and educational experiences in support of departmental philosophy and objectives, as well as Health System initiatives.

EDUCATION/TRAINING:

Minimum:

Graduate of a formally organized hospital or college affiliated Medical Dosimetry program with clinical and classroom curriculum and training or experience in field totaling 18 months or Bachelor or Arts or Science degree with a major in the physical or biological sciences or registered radiation therapy technologist and at least two years on the job training in Medical Dosimetry or Associate degree in Science, Bachelor of Arts or Science in field other than above and completion of training in Medical Dosimetry and at least seven years work experience in field.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
Successful completion of annual clinical, age and job specific competencies and skill verification tools required.
Strong mathematical skills including algebra, trigonometry and introductory calculus.
Knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
Ability to establish effective working relationships and clearly and calmly communicate in English both verbally and in writing with patients, medical staff and the public.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Designs and documents a treatment plan using computerized or manual computations and considering dose limiting structures that will deliver prescribed radiation doses and field placement techniques in accordance with prescription to a defined tumor volume. Verifies mathematical accuracy of all calculations using established system.
Coordinates treatment planning simulations and tumor localization on dedicated CT MRI and/or PET images following established protocols. Utilizes software packages commonly used in the field (fusion image software, quality assurance software, etc.).
Supervises, performs or assists in the planning of the fabrication of beam modifying devices and production of immobilization devices.
As directed by Medical Physicist assists in the application of specific methods of dosimetry, intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy procedures and in the subsequent calculation of dose distributions.
Supervises therapist staff in the implementation of treatment plans including the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangement and other treatment variables.
Provides physics and technical support to the Medical Physicist in radiation protection, machine calibrations and quality assurance of radiation oncology equipment.
Provides clinical instruction and supervision to staff dosimetrist. Will instruct on new treatment techniques and computer software as changes occur in the field. Participates in clinical research for the development and implementation of new techniques.
