The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) has a Potential need for a Genomics Computational Systems Biologist to support our government customer located in Fort Detrick, Frederick, MD.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Support and maintain high-throughput analysis pipelines for omics data, pathogen discovery, genome analysis and to integrate with in-house databases.
  • Process large-scale and high-throughput genomics datasets generated from Oxford Nanopore, and Illumina sequencers (e.g., whole genome sequencing and RNA-Seq).
  • Setup and maintain travel laptops for overseas training missions.
  • Assist in monitoring and responding hardware/server issues, Manage and administer the Microsoft HPC cluster, including installing, configuring, and maintaining HPC software and related tools. Monitor and optimize the performance of the HPC infrastructure, identifying and resolving any performance bottlenecks.
  • Collaborate with researchers and end-users to understand their computing and data requirements, provide guidance, and implement solutions to address their needs. Monitor HPC jobs and queues, troubleshoot issues, and perform system debugging to ensure job completeness and on-time delivery.
  • Conduct regular system backups and develop disaster recovery plans to minimize downtime in case of system failures or data loss. Stay up to date with the latest advancements in HPC technologies, tools, and best practices, and make recommendations for system upgrades and optimizations. Document system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides for internal reference and knowledge sharing.
  • Assist to maintain laboratory records documenting sample processing, analysis pipeline design and usage, and data management and backups that meet current CGS and Institutional requirements and ensure continuity and collective sharing of resources. Communicate experimental data, laboratory issues, or other task-related issue to the PI or TPOC.
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory equipment, network connectivity to equipment, regular equipment-specific updates and data storage management, as well as keeping an organized, safe, and professional work environment.
  • May require minimum travel to provide training in installing pipelines and support to external collaborators.
  • Under special circumstances, may be required to work varied schedules (second shift) and occasional weekends to accomplish time sensitive laboratory tasks.
  • May be required to present work, attend meetings and training, and in collaboration with the government, engage with partners to support the biosurveillance and training missions which may require CONUS or OCONUS travel approximately 1-2 times per year.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
  • Master's degree in biomedical science/bioinformatics/math/computer science related field with a minimum of five (5) years' experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Must have two (2) to three (3) years' experience in bio surveillance.
  • Must have three (3) to five (5) years' experience working within a Linux environment and a good knowledge of scripting language for handling large-scale parallel data pipeline development, and programming language for implementing compute node server-side pipelines.
  • Proficiency with Python, Perl, Shell, R, C , and JAVA is preferable.Mustpreferable. Must have expertise in the areas of NGS data analysis.
  • Must be able to build and maintain analytical workflows and tools for automated deployment of bioinformatics analytical pipeline for parallel processing of Next Generation Sequencing data.
  • Must be knowledgeable in latest HPC technologies, including but not limited to Microsoft HPC cluster including installing, configuring, and maintaining HPC software and related tools, and best practices.

  • U.S. Citizen
  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid U.S. Passport
  • Must pass NACI background check.
