Overview:

Evaluate, monitor, and assess the credit risks of larger, more complex Business Banking credit relationships with total bank exposure of >$3MM through financial statement and tax return analysis, industry assessment, collateral valuation, cash flow analysis, and ability to repay annual debt service.

THIS ROLE IS HYBRID AND CAN BE BASED OUT OF BUFFALO, NY, TIMONIUM, MD or BRIDGEPORT, CT.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the credit needs of customers by underwriting new requests and material modifications from deal screen through approval.
  • Manage the ongoing credit risk of existing loans through continuous credit monitoring activities enabling the timely identification of emerging credit risk so that appropriate actions can be taken to manage the risk, minimize losses and assign an accurate risk rating on annual reviews, PLRs, and interim event memos.
  • Review all pertinent credit and financial information, including but not limited to financial statements, tax returns, due diligence reports, credit bureaus, appraisals, internal history, industry research and peer data.
  • Analyze financial information and related materials and prepare the credit analyses for large Business Banking Relationships >$3MM. Written analyses to include an independent credit quality assessment with well supported risk rating, identification of and description of credit risks and mitigants, industry concerns, market trends, financial trends, cash flow, collateral analysis, and guarantor assessments.
  • Assist in the structure of loan requests, where appropriate, to include suggestions on terms, conditions, controls, collateral, and guarantors.
  • Partner proactively with relationship managers and be intimately involved throughout the deal process, from deal screen through approval and for the life of the loan to maintain timely and accurate risk ratings for a portfolio of commercial credits. Spread financial statements and prepare financial models designed to sensitize various conditions impacting the proposed transaction.
  • As the 1st Line of Defense (LOD) credit representative on the deal team, prepare summary, present facts, answer questions, and offers opinions and recommendations concerning creditworthiness to 2nd LOD Credit Officers.
  • Ensure credit policy compliance by verifying adherence of underwriting to M&T Bank's Credit Policy and commenting on any risk and mitigants associated with non-compliance.
  • Develop an understanding of governmental loan programs (SBA lending).
  • Provide credit training to new Business Credit Center team members and Business Banking Sales as needed.
  • Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
  • Understand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company's Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.


Scope of Responsibilities:

The team is responsible for independent credit quality assessment of Business Banking's largest relationships with total bank exposure >$3MM. These assessments range from initial analyses of new relationships to the Bank to material modifications or restructurings of long-term relationships and ongoing monitoring through the life of the loan. Also responsible for ensuring the accurate completion of the Bank's risk rating scorecards and financial statement spreads. The work completed in this capacity is used to make new credit decisions. The position interacts with Business Banking relationship managers throughout the bank's footprint as well as other internal personnel. Works independently with limited supervision. Incumbent is to ensure credit requests are underwritten in accordance with Bank policy and Business Banking underwriting guidelines in a timely manner. Work closely with the sales to team to understand the borrower's business model and identify specific loan purpose. Provide appropriate financing structures that mitigate risk, while allowing the Bank to win additional business. Must be able to determine structure, terms and loan conditions for a lending relationship. Furthermore, the incumbent must be able to identify industry risks for the bank's customers through numerous industry segments and structure the credit relationship appropriately based on that risk.

Supervisory/ Managerial Responsibilities:

Provide training to new Business Credit Center team members, as well as to the Business Banking and Branch sales teams.

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelors in related field or in lieu of a degree, equivalent in experience (# yrs of education = # yrs of work experience) in a related field.
Minimum of 4 years previous consumer, commercial or business lending experience.

Ability to analyze and understand financial statements, business and personal tax returns, as well as credit reports.
Ability to properly calculate business and personal cash flow to determine the ability to service debt.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $60,890.34 - $101,483.90 Annual (USD). The successful candidate's particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
