What is the opportunity?
As Managing Counsel, Cross-Border, you will support the goals of the SVP & Deputy General Counsel, Products & Businesses in achieving the business/operations, strategic priorities and operational performance goals of the Law Group. Reporting directly to the Assistant General Counsel, AML/Financial Crimes, Canadian Regulatory & Cross-Border, you will provide legal services across the enterprise, focusing on legal and regulatory matters relating to international banking and related matters.

Job Description
What is the opportunity?
As Managing Counsel, Cross-Border, you will support the goals of the SVP & Deputy General Counsel, Products & Businesses in achieving the business/operations, strategic priorities and operational performance goals of the Law Group. Reporting directly to the Assistant General Counsel, AML/Financial Crimes, Canadian Regulatory & Cross-Border, you will provide legal services across the enterprise, focusing on legal and regulatory matters relating to international banking and related matters.
What will you do?
- Cross-Border Legal Advice: Act as key senior legal advisor to RBC enterprise businesses and functions and be responsible for providing legal advice and thought leadership on issues relating to cross-border offering of financial products and services, including structuring cross-border transactions, compliance with regulations, and navigating complex legal landscapes across different jurisdictions.
- Business Strategy: Work closely with Assistant General Counsel in advising the business on strategic initiatives in new and emerging areas that involve cross-border issues and coordinate cross-border legal resources and advice across business lines.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring compliance with banking and securities regulations, including those of foreign jurisdictions.
- Contract Negotiation: Negotiating and drafting complex cross-border contracts, including loan agreements, credit facilities, and other financial instruments.
- In this role, you will communicate and interact frequently with RBC partners and/or employees located across Canada and/or worldwide.
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have
- Bachelor of Law (Common Law or Civil) from a recognized law school
- Member of the Bar in any Canadian Province or Territory
- Ability to navigate complex legal frameworks and landscapes across different jurisdictions; ability to remain current on relevant laws, regulations, rulings, interpretations and jurisprudence in multiple legal jurisdictions
- Ability to oversee and coordinate the provision of cross-border research and advice across the enterprise and to centralize and organize legal advice from multiple foreign jurisdictions
- Ability to analyze legal risk in context of business realities, and be flexible in approach
Nice-to-have
- Experience researching and advising on cross-jurisdictional banking matters
- Knowledge of securities and other financial laws of foreign jurisdictions
- Knowledge of the businesses and functions facilitating alignment between legal advice and strategic priorities
- Ability to work at all levels of management and team members, and build a strong network of peers and partners
