Role Purpose

The Development Specialist is responsible for the design, development, and management of custom and standard media formulations for use in large scale liquid media manufacturing. They will develop, conduct, and report on critical product and process experiments in support of new product introduction, product optimizations, or other plant-critical initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Product Development and Customer Service
  • Leads development and NPI for GMP products in coordination with the Plant Quality Management System producing new products and processes including scale-up expertise and documentation drafting via change control.
  • Conducts and manages critical experiments to evaluate new and existing formulations in support of process understanding, material and formulation specifications, or other product or process development activities (alternate sourcing, design for manufacturability, portfolio standardization and scrap reduction, or other efforts as needed.)

Manufacturing Excellence
  • Lead or support as needed investigations of operational issues associated with chemical formulation, raw material or finished good variation. Report out on key conclusions and improvement opportunities.
  • Support Process Engineering in development and implementation of robust, capable manufacturing processes for liquid and powder formulation processes.

Engineering Rigor / Technical Expertise
  • Serves as the Subject Mater Expert on formulation development and diagnostics.
  • Remain engaged and current on market changes, industry trends, or other external influences in the Media and Serum industry.
  • Performs preventative and ongoing maintenance of lab equipment.
  • Writes technical reports that highlight results and gives detailed analysis of data.
  • Presents data analysis and recommendations at cross-functional product development meetings.

Leadership and Development
  • Develop career planning strategy with functional leadership, considering career interests, strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities.
  • Build development plan for professional growth and manage through periodic discussions with leadership, coordination of targeted SMART engagement and continuous education as appropriate.


Experiences/Education - Required

  • Bachelor of Science in an Engineering or Physical Sciences discipline.
  • 0-2 years experience in lab or development environments or process engineering environments.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with manufacturing, quality, plant leadership, other functional leaders.


Experiences/Education - Desired

  • Master of Science in an Engineering or Physical Sciences discipline.
  • Work or educational experience in aseptic processing, pharmaceutical or medical device manufacturing.
  • Experience in technical problem solving and root cause analysis to drive improvements in manufacturing process capability, machine reliability and equipment output.
  • Familiarity with the application PEx tools, Problem Solving skills, MEE tools.

The range for this position is $68,833.00 - $94,646.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
