The Systems Intelligence Program Lead Engineer is responsible for leading the development and supporting all aspects of the systems intelligence program for global business units as part of the advanced technology team serving Air Conditioning and Water Heating divisions to ensure customer centric development of new technologies and initiatives focused on control systems. Overseeing development of new tools, methods, and systems to drive innovation and collaboration across US and global business units impacting both Air and Water Heating roadmaps.

The Systems Intelligence Program Lead Engineer will provide guidance and mentorship to a team of Electrical/Software Engineer(s) and build a high-functioning team which interacts with global Air and Water Heating divisions to develop early-stage conceptualizations of products and/or technologies based on customer and market feedback through leading edge technology development, concept validation, fast prototyping of electro-mechanical systems, and/or enhanced operational capabilities in residential and commercial AC/HP products, furnaces, boilers, gas/electric and Heat Pump Water Heater products.

Working in collaboration, this position conducts technology advancement initiatives with a focus on creating cost-effective control strategies, instrumentation, adaptive algorithms, and concept features with the goal of creating new functionality of products. An ideal candidate has an entrepreneurial attitude, disruptor mindset, passion for technology and strong desire to create products and run programs to drive innovation in the work culture.

This position will serve the Advanced Technology & Research Center of Excellence in Montgomery, AL or Roswell, GA across Rheem's Water and Air Divisions.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Mentorship: Providing exemplary leadership and mentorship to a team of electronic controls engineer(s), fostering a global culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • System Architecture and Design: Leading the development and extension of system architecture and design for electronic controller applications, driving technological advancements and ensuring robust solutions.
  • Develop early-stage conceptualization of new technologies, enhancements of existing products and proof-of-concept (POC) demonstrations of emerging technology.
  • Technical owner for technology projects through to completion and managing progress relative to milestones.
  • Create outsourcing portfolio for rapid prototyping, small batch manufacturing, and on-demand engineering for global business units.
  • Work directly with startups, evaluate emerging technology and deploy pilots where opportunity arise for the business.
  • Research high end and emerging technologies for controls, mechanical, software and electrical design elements of enhanced product functional capabilities of performance management, health monitoring, smart sensing/perception functions, ease-of-use, and other like features.
  • Develop controls concepts for enhanced functionalities, design integration plans, assessment of technical feasibility, application of constraints in selection and assessment of cost effectiveness.
  • Develop proof of concept and functional feasibility test plans, controls system setup that would represent operating conditions of the target global markets.
  • Collaborate with the Reliability Engineering, Controls team, Sourcing and Product Development Engineering while participating in early stages of product design, development, and documentation for new controls related project assignments.
  • Work with suppliers to specify new instrumentation technologies and/or components that may also entail custom developments. Remain abreast of emerging technologies and competing alternatives.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to decide course of action, taking calculated risks, developing strategic plans, roadmaps, brainstorming and requirements for gathering/definition.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to design, fabricate, test, and demonstrate innovative product solutions.
  • Bring in emerging technology experts and set up companywide technology seminars.
  • Manage outside engineering firms, facilitate solutions via coordinating cross functional group.
  • Provides direct supervision over assigned staff, if applicable.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, Mechanical, Controls Engineering or related engineering field
  • Experience in setting up fast prototyping controls systems via PLCs, Raspberry Pie, Arduino, and other PCB technologies for various products.
  • 7 years of progressive experience in testing, analysis, modeling, and/or design of mixed signal control systems including Hardware and Software.
  • 2+ years of leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Strong ability to influence, coach, and build a high-functioning team.
  • Strong leadership skills, big-picture thinking, adaptability, flexibility, perseverance, ability to resolve conflict and drive change.
  • Educational background in controls engineering, electrical circuit design, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and manufacturing engineering processes
  • Working knowledge of compressor management systems, actuators, sensors, intelligent control principles, micro devices, optoelectronic systems, and AC/HP systems integration
  • Strong Agile controls solution development ability.
  • Proven ability to emphasize and connect with the customers, identify their problems, and develop solutions independently.
  • Simplify concept and prototype development process with a speed to market mindset.
  • Demonstrated ability in planning, multi-tasking, prioritization, and project leadership as essential to integrative design approach in mechatronics.
  • Translating functional objectives to design; determination of sensed and manipulated variables; selection of and interface requirements for sensors, actuators, analog/digital electronics, microcontroller and the like.
  • Prototype development, optimization, signal processing, decision and control, fault diagnostic, etc.
  • Product development process experience in design, modelling, simulation, analysis, refinement, and validation cycle
  • Proven professional mentoring, communications skills, and ability to compose professional business correspondence for internal and external dissemination.
  • Demonstrated ability to work constructively with all levels of internal management, staff members, external suppliers, and customers.
  • Experience with statistical analysis of large datasets.
  • Strong analytical and reasoning skills.
  • Ability to travel without restrictions 25%

HOW TO STAND OUT
  • Master's Degree in Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, Mechanical, Controls Engineering or related engineering field
  • 5+ years of experience in translating functional objectives to design; selection of interface requirements for sensors, actuators, analog/digital electronics, microcontroller and the like
  • Theoretical and working knowledge of thermodynamics, embedded controls, and VFDs for vapor compression systems, with 2+ years of relevant experience with AC/HP or water heater products
  • Control algorithms and physics-based system level simulation experience.
