TRAVEL:
All Market contractors are subject to working at a duty location at any of the Military Treatment Facility (MTFs) or associated sub clinics within the Colorado Military Health System (CMHS).
DRIVING REQUIREMENT:
Must have or be able to attain a valid state driver's license and be insurable on the company's automobile insurance policy. Driving may be required when traveling and/or short occasional amounts of local driving. The expected driving time is less than 10%.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed primarily indoors at a well-lit military treatment facility such as a clinic, outpatient facility or hospital. The environment is normally air conditioned, but conditions may change dependent upon circumstances. Work may need to be performed in a fast-paced environment requiring quick thinking and rapid judgements. Employee will be exposed to a wide variety of clients in differing functions, personalities and abilities. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids, latex, radiation or other contaminants and safety issues. May be exposed to infection or diseases from contact with patients.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Position consists of sitting for long periods of time, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, speaking, or translating. Periods of walking, standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and lifting boxes weighing up to 50 pounds. Moderate to extended periods of office work with heavy periods of computer usage. SUMMARY:
Responsibilities include the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for patients of all ages with any symptom, illness, injury, or condition, provide medical services within the scope of practice of the collaborating physician(s), including routine primary and preventive care of children and adults.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides primary or specialty medical care with the cognizance or supervision of a physician.
- Works under general supervision of the Chief, Family Medicine who discusses policies and objectives. There is no direct supervision, and the individual acts independently in areas of demonstrated competency within their designated scope of practice.
- Will have a physician preceptor identified in writing who will provide consultation, clinical feedback, and general oversight of the PA's practice.
- May refer patients to specialty clinics, and assess, stabilize, and determine disposition of patients with emergent conditions.
- Provides chart review for quality assurance purposes in the area of family medicine if requested on an occasional basis.
- Attend and participate in patient care reports, patient care conferences, team conferences, professional staff conferences and other appropriate professional activities only to the extent that such attendance and participation is relative to his/her assigned cases and/or performance of services as determined by the supervisor.
- May become the primary care manager (PCM) for a panel of patients. As a PCM, will be the primary person responsible for the management of the health and wellness of assigned patients. Duties include:
- Examination of patients, formulation differential diagnostic plans, defines and orders required diagnostic testing.
- Interpretation of examination findings and test results, and implementation of treatment plans.
- Determines need for consultation and assists in medical care and treatment provided at the direction of other specialists.
- Approving/disapproving subspecialty referrals.
- Answering patient telephone consults with the assistance of clinic staff.
- Providing primary and secondary preventive maintenance care.
- Plan and initiate proper treatment within defined privileges and the scope of practice of the facility.
- Identify and report those situations and individual cases which have public health significance and carry out effective control measures.
- Perform the following blocks: Digital, Local Infiltration, and Intercostal.
- Maintain inpatient and outpatient medical records in accordance with MTF procedures.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assigned to a 48X3 flight surgeon for professional supervision which means oversight, control, and direction of the services of a physician assistant, and includes but is not limited to:
- Continuous direct communication either in person or by radio, telephone or other telecommunications between the PA and supervisor.
- Active and continuing overview of PA's activities, ensuring supervisor's directions are implemented and the PA is supported in the performance of his/her duties.
- Consultation with a physician-preceptor if the PA is seeing a patient for the third time for the same acute medical problem. This requirement does not include chronic stable diagnoses, which may be seen numerous times under a supervision plan that has been put in place to assist the PA.
- Personal review of the PA's services by their supervisor through a face-to-face meeting with the PA at least weekly to ensure quality patient care, at a facility or practice location where the PA or supervisor perform services.
- Review of charts and records of PAs on a regular basis ensuring quality patient care and written documentation at the facility or practice location where the PA or supervisor perform services.
- Delineation of a predetermined plan for emergency situations.
- Designation of alternate/substitute 48X3 FSs in the absence of the supervisor. The alternate performs the supervision as required above.
Job Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: Successfully completed a Physician Assistant Education Program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission for Physician Education, Inc (ARC-PA).
- National Certification: Maintains an active, current, valid, unrestricted NCCPA certification.
- Licensure: Must possess and maintain an active, current, valid and unrestricted license from a US jurisdiction (fifty States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands) to practice independently within the defined scope of practice for their specialty. Non-personal services contract personnel must be licensed in the jurisdiction in which the MTF is located.
- Experience/Clinical Competency: Have actively practiced as a Physician Assistant or in training for twenty-four (24) months within the last thirty-six (36) months and are able to demonstrate clinical competency.
- Health Status: Must be able to safely execute the responsibilities of their specialty in providing health care. Has no medical or mental condition that prevents or that significantly reduces an individual's ability to safely execute their approved scope of practice in providing health care. This includes alcohol or drug abuse, or mental health disorder not responsive to treatment.
- Advanced Life Support Certifications: Must possess and maintains current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Red Cross.
- Professional Behavior/Conduct: Must not have any reported allegations of misconduct to external regulatory agencies where there is reasonable cause (such as an arrest) that could have a serious impact on patient/staff welfare or safety.
- Must obtain and maintain the site's required health screening and immunization requirements.
- Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
- Identify and report those situations and individual cases which have public health significance and carry out effective control measures.
- Clearly communicate to other health personnel either orally or in writing the findings, diagnosis, and planned treatment regimen.
- Stabilize and manage a patient in a medical or surgical emergency and/or transfer to physician care.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
