I. Job Summary

Under minimal supervision, installs, configures and provides maintenance and administration of complex networks and computer systems pertaining to UNIX and/or Linux operating systems.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides advanced technical support and resolves complicated or ambiguous problems regarding UNIX/Linux-based networks, hardware and software.
  • Develops strategies for complex processes (including but not limited to backup/restore, shutdown, and startup).
  • Manages complicated systems activities and adjusts system parameters and configuration to ensure security of systems and maximum performance.
  • Monitors disk space usage and performs capacity analysis as needed.
  • Acts as liaison between technical/non-technical personnel and vendors in obtaining requirements, designing, and implementing UNIX/Linux-based systems.
  • Provides user account set up on servers and identifies possible improvements (security gaps, patch levels, capacity thresholds) to optimize performance.
  • Performs advanced script writing and/or programming as needed.
  • Researches emerging trends and technologies to stay current within the field.


III. Qualifications

A. Education and Experience
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree (accredited) in Computer Science, MIS, or similar area of study, or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and four (4) years of relevant experience.
  • Experience: Five (5) years of previous experience required (in addition to education requirement).

B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements
  • None required.

C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

Technically advanced knowledge or in-depth skills in one or more of the following is required:
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise (conceptually and hands-on) in AIX, Solaris, Linux, and VMware Operating System management, hardware specification and configuration, performance tuning techniques, TCP/IP network configuration, enterprise backup administration, scripting and automation utilities, capacity planning, workload management & distribution, implementation testing, and event management.
  • Expertise in Server virtualization, including AIX PowerVM, Xen, KVM, Solaris Zones, and VMware Infrastructure management.
  • Proven experience supporting resource intensive web, application and database environments, including high level expertise with web infrastructures (authentication, encryption, load balancing, session management), application middleware (Apache, JRE, EAI, JDBC), java application environments (WebSphere,JBoss, Sun One, WebLogic), and Oracle.
  • Integration expertise with a Microsoft Windows computing infrastructure including directory services, file sharing, networking, client configuration, and multi-platform tiered application deployment.
  • Experience with large, enterprise computing environments, and collaboration with multiple functional teams and customers to ensure high service levels and effective solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience in successful development and implementation of new technologies and work process.
  • Competency in project management, effectively arranging resources, and managing multiple projects in a cross-functional environment.
  • Ability to articulate and communicate to technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to lead a team to achieve goals within set deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment.
  • Ability to develop strategies and define procedures.
  • IBM Certified System Administrator/Expert, Red Hat Virtualization Technologies, Red Hat Certified Systems Engineer, Solaris certifications.

D. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities that Contribute to Success

May require technically advanced or in-depth skills in one or more of the following:
