The Vice President Patient Care Services for Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) reports directly to the Senior Vice President & YNHH Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and is responsible for the overall direction and management of nursing professional practice, education and administration. The VP Patient Care Services guides the execution of YNHH's strategic plans while advancing the organizational mission, vision and values.
This role will maintain existing high standards and goals for nursing practice while working closely with the CNO, YNHH executive team, physician leaders, the System Chief Nurse Executive, and other nurse leaders across YNHHS, ensuring that YNHH provides a clinical practice environment that is patient-centered, with unsurpassed clinical quality and patient safety across all sites of care.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Organizational Leadership:
    • 1.1 Provide overall leadership and direction for patient care delivery across the hospital, in inpatient and outpatient operations. Maintains central oversight of Patient Care Services functions and employees.
  • 2. Outcomes Management:
    • 2.1 Ensures that nursing practice delivers consistent, safe, high quality patient care to the satisfaction of all customers, and that professional excellence is recognized.
  • 3. Business Strategy & Implementation:
    • 3.1 Identifies and operationalizes the impact of market trends. Ensures the development of responsive strategic and operational Divisional plans that enhance market presence to ensure understanding, alignment, and commitment of all staff.
  • 4. Fiscal Management:
    • 4.1 Initiates, oversees and develops processes to ensure accountability for effective operations and resource management.
  • 5. Human Resource Management:
    • 5.1 In partnership with stakeholders from human resources, finance, strategy, and operations, leads the development of a workforce plan that includes diversity and responds to the clinical needs of the organization, providing guidance on matters related to staff competencies, practice, and working conditions.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Master degree in Nursing or related field required. Doctoral Degree strongly preferred, either DNP or PhD.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum ten (10) years? experience in increasingly responsible nursing and inpatient operational leadership roles. Leadership experience in complex academic health system setting, leading large, diverse, interdisciplinary teams in a complex labor environment preferred.

LICENSURE

Must have and maintain active CT State License as a Registered Nurse. Nursing leadership certification required ? including ANCC Basic (NE) Nurse Executive, or AONE (CNML) Certified Nurse Manager Leader

SPECIAL SKILLS

Magnet experience - Personal success in an institutional Magnet journey preferred. Experience improving organizational performance and managing complex change in areas such as clinical quality, patient safety, patient and staff engagement, and/or resource allocation. Demonstrated financial and business acumen developing and managing annual budgets reflecting staffing, capital and other operating expenses. A strong, dynamic, visible leader with high standards for Service Excellence patient care, teamwork and professional development. A skilled communicator. Possesses superb interpersonal skills.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Requires on-going flexibility as well as ability to address issues that arise demanding immediate attention and /or continued surveillance with effective results. Must be able to balance these interruptions with routine schedule of on-going responsibilities and assist staff to do the same. Must be able to work under pressure and deadlines. Must be mobile and have own reliable transportation to all sites of YNHHS. Hours of work will vary including evenings and some weekends. Ability to sit for long periods, computer literate and ability to reach and lift heavy files and notebooks.
