Fleet Engineering Manager, Central Design - Mechanical and Civil
Southern Nuclear Company's Central Design Organization is seeking a high-performing Manager with strong collaborative and leadership skills. This position will be located at Southern Nuclear Company's Energy Center in Birmingham, Alabama.
SUMMARY:
The Central Design Manager (Birmingham) reports directly to the Fleet Central Design Senior Manager and is responsible for overall management and providing technical direction for Mechanical/Civil Central Design at the Energy Center. The Central Design Manager leads a department that provides discipline-oriented design products for the SNC nuclear plants. In this role, the individual will ensure discipline-related analysis and associated design basis material are maintained. The manager is also responsible for establishing direction with regards to process standardization, resource planning, and personnel development.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide leadership and guidance to discipline-oriented Design personnel in the development and maintenance of design products
- Provide technical oversight and approval of design products generated by the Central Design department
- Ensure changes to plant design are of high quality, technically accurate and are carried out in accordance with design requirements
- Ensure appropriate design interface controls are in place between organizations performing engineering work affecting plant design
- Interfaces with the Fleet Central Design Senior Manager and Site Design organizations to ensure modifications are consistent with the design basis
- Ensure design review meetings are held and ensure appropriate plant participation and challenge for proposed designs
- Ensure design modifications are developed in accordance with quality, schedule, and budgetary requirements
- Ensure design basis documentation is maintained up-to-date and accurate
- Possess knowledge of discipline-specific calculations, design criteria, and functional system descriptions
- Possess knowledge of plant systems, design bases, and operational practices
- Develop or support the development of selected common designs, conceptual designs, or specifications
- Develop or support the development of specialty design analyses
- Interface with SNC Site Design organizations, NSSS vendors, SCS, and contracted Architect Engineers to ensure designs and studies are consistent with plant design basis
- Interface with other Engineering groups to address product impacts and/or to provide design or SME support
- Support the SNC fleet in a perform role for pipe stress analysis and seismic equipment qualification.
- Participate in the Emergency Response Organization, as required
- Occasional travel required, including travel to other nuclear plants
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
- BS in Engineering from an ABET accredited university
- An advanced degree and/or a PE license is preferred
Job Experience:
- 8 years of experience in nuclear power
- Previous supervisory or management experience required, preferably in a design role
- Thorough understanding of nuclear plant processes and systems required
Technical Requirements:
- Detailed knowledge of plant design bases
- Detailed knowledge and expertise in design processes and configuration control processes
- Working knowledge of BWR and/or PWR systems, structures, and components
- Working knowledge of nuclear design codes and standards
Leadership Attributes:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to hold self and others accountable to established policies and procedures
- A high degree of management and teamwork skills are required to effectively provide leadership to engineers and to maintain schedules and priorities for assigned work
