The Clinical Supervisor manages shift schedules, facilitates patient throughput, and optimizes staff workflow to meet pediatric patient care needs. Strong critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills are essential to achieving positive patient outcomes. Charge nurses at VPH promote staff engagement and accountability for the overall forward movement of the unit and the organization to further the hospital's mission of improving the quality of health in the San Fernando Valley.

What We're Looking For:
- Experience:
- Two (2) to five (5) years of clinical experience as a registered nurse in an acute care pediatric setting.
- Prior charge nurse experience preferred; minimum one (1) year charge nurse experience required if hired/transferred into PACU.
- Meets CN III requirements or will meet them within 90 days of hire/appointment.
- Effective communication skills, including speaking, enunciating, and writing.
- Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. RN staff hired on or after April 2023, with an associate degree in nursing, are required to enroll in an accredited BSN program within 30 days of employment and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of hire.
- Licensure/Certifications:
- Current licensure with the California Board of Registered Nursing.
- Must successfully complete and maintain BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
- Must successfully complete and maintain PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification.
- Must successfully complete and maintain NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification.
- Must successfully complete and maintain LA City Fire Card certification at the time of hire or within the first 30 days of employment.
- Registered Nurse Certification (RNC) preferred in in pediatric nursing.
- Active involvement as a leader/participant in a hospital-wide committee or council.
Specific Responsibilities:
Facilitator of Excellent Relationship-Based Patient Care and Optimal Patient Experience:
- Advocates for pediatric patients and their families, ensuring a compassionate care experience.
- Serves as a resource for policies, procedures, and standards of care specific to pediatrics.
- Participates in hospital-wide committees and councils for two-way information sharing.
- Implements and monitors evidence-based practice strategies for pediatric patient care improvement.
- Promotes a positive environment to enhance the patient and family experience.
- Rounds on all pediatric patients and their families, ensuring care boards reflect the patient's plan of care, and addressing concerns promptly.
Clinical Mentorship and Role Model:
- Acts as a clinical resource by providing routine assistance/support at the bedside and in emergencies.
- Facilitates conflict resolution in a timely manner.
- Follows the chain of command in addressing emergency situations.
- Serves as a mentor and resource, assisting new staff with clinical orientation and training.
Shift Supervision:
- Assists with scheduling, ensuring appropriate staff experience and competency levels for pediatric care.
- Ensures the availability of pediatric supplies and equipment for current and upcoming shifts.
- Utilizes SBAR for hand-off reports during shift changes.
- Communicates important concerns to the manager/director/operations supervisor.
- Delegates and coordinates tasks/functions of RNs, CNAs, students, and unit secretaries.
- Initiates the Chain of Command Policy when needed.
- Leads/participates in huddles, charge nurse meetings, and unit-based council meetings.
- Manages workload cost-effectively by adjusting staffing levels based on pediatric patient census.
- Monitors patient care to ensure pediatric hygiene and safety needs are met.
- Partners with staff to address and resolve patient, family, physician, and visitor concerns.
- Provides performance feedback for staff and new graduate nurses.
- Serves as a liaison between pediatricians and the clinical care team.
Facilitate Timely Patient Throughput:
- Manages patient flow with a proactive approach, anticipating the next pediatric patient stable for transfer.
- Places pediatric patients from ED/PACU/direct admits promptly.
- Prepares for and actively participates in daily bed board and All Bed Crisis (ABC) meetings.
- Coordinates pediatric patient transfers to the next level of care and communicates delays effectively.
Performance Improvement and Quality Compliance:
- Ensures timely completion and reporting of necessary documentation and reports before the end of each shift.
- Follows up on occurrence reports.
- Identifies opportunities for performance improvement, quality, and regulatory compliance.
- Conducts chart/computer audits and performance improvement activities as requested.
- Oversees chart/computer checks for documentation accuracy and completeness.
Professional Growth and Development:
- Attends and actively participates in CNIII/charge nurse development and informational meetings.
- Complies with charge nurse and behavioral expectations at Valley Presbyterian Hospital.
- Exhibits professionalism in appearance, conduct, and communication appropriate to the situation.
Key Responsibilities:
