Performs technical, mainly pre-defined tasks for accomplishing defined service delivery work for customer equipment.
Varian Proton Therapy Systems utilize the following subsystems of which the candidate is expected to demonstrate knowledge of:
  • High Vacuum
  • Cryogenics and Superconducting Magnets
  • High Voltage applications, AC and DC
  • RF Power Delivery System
  • X-ray with Computed Tomography
  • Industrial Robots and Motion Control
  • Industrial PLC Controls
  • Radiation Dosimetry
  • This job may include any aspect of field support, and is not limited to system hardware and software, PCs, and networking/wireless networking. Installs and upgrades a wide range of complex and advanced company products according to technical documentation and company guidelines to ensure that customer's equipment operates efficiently.
  • Provides highly visible customer support through the performance of on-site support of proton therapy equipment and ancillary devices, as well as overseeing any necessary diagnoses, troubleshooting, service, upgrades, repair, installation and commissioning of complex equipment and systems.
  • Checks out and approves operational quality of system equipment.
  • Instructs customers in the operation - and if the site has customer technical personnel on site: the customer service team in the maintenance of the system.
  • Serves as company liaison with customer on administrative and technical matters for assigned projects. Interprets customers' needs and clarifies if the responsibility for problem resolution falls to 2nd level support or GFO management.
  • Demonstrates to customer equipment operation and specification according to Customer Acceptance Procedure and Customer Technical Bulletins, as required
  • Understanding of the clinical routines to be able to professionally work with the customer to support patient treatment
  • May coordinate and review the activities of a small group of Installation Representatives and Subcontractors.
  • Works in cooperation with other expert company resources, required to assist in performing the installation, upgrade and troubleshooting activities as well as service activities.
  • Works within a compact team of site engineers, monitoring all aspects of the proton therapy system.
  • Fulfills special client's requirements when in place, following company's procedures and politics.
  • Performs maintenance of the system in accordance with Preventive Maintenance Plan and Maintenance Instructions.
  • Performs necessary upgrades of the system in accordance with Service Technical Bulletins, as needed.
  • Proactively monitors condition of the system and escalates to site management and/or 2nd level support if abnormal operation/trends are identified.
  • Provides filed service reports about executed tasks in Unity system, using defined company standards.
  • Follows all applicable company instructions, requirements and policies.
  • Follows both company and local safety policies.
  • Maintain device history records regarding operating characteristics, design factors, technical performance, and development of products to improve installation efficiency.
  • Performs parts inventory and ordering for assigned installation, including replenishing spare parts kit, short shipment and return consigned parts appropriately and in a timely manner per procedure as necessary for each install.
  • During Installations and Upgrade activities: Conduct the Acceptance Conditions testing, to ensure that all installation conditions will be met according to schedule and that customers can sign the Acceptance Letters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by site general manager or FSE lead tech.
  • Works on assignments that are moderately difficult, requiring judgment in resolving issues or in making recommendations.
  • Takes on lead role when working with newer and less experienced colleagues, shares knowledge.


Typical Education and Experience
  • Knowledge of and sound professional experience with electronic, mechatronic and electro-mechanical engineering, testing equipment used for verification, checkout, and calibration of electronic and/or mechanical equipment.
  • Capable to work on assignments that are moderate difficult, resolving issues or making recommendations.
  • Requires minimum to no supervision in daily duties.
  • Normally receives little instruction on day to- day work, general instructions on newly introduced assignments.
  • Knowledge of and sound professional technical experience with micro-computers/PC based systems
  • Customer focused attitude.
  • Articulate and skilled in interpersonal communication.
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
  • Proficient in utilizing business tools such as Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Has completed full Varian internal technical training basic program.
  • Obtains and completes Varian's training plan specific to assigned responsibility.
  • Has substantial understanding of the job and applies knowledge and skills to complete a wide range of tasks.


Other Desired Skills and Knowledge
  • Experience with SAP or equivalent ERP and PDM products and productivity software.
  • Experience in servicing or manufacturing of medical devices with conforming of ISO13485 standard
  • Knowledge of local language.
  • May be required to specialize in specific technical areas and have a solid level of cross-functional and overall system knowledge.
  • Establish and maintain a network with the 2nd level Support Team.


Special Job Requirements
  • Unless prohibited by law, the position must meet all Vendor Credentialing requirements necessary to have full client access and must continue to meet those requirements during Varian employment in this position.
  • Perform emergency on-site service interventions when required, to provide the highest level of customer satisfaction.
  • Perform duties within a rotating three-shift system including holidays/weekends as required.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including beyond standard work week hours.
  • Works in radiation-controlled area.
  • Occupational exposure to radiation and other occupational hazards pertaining to the installation and maintenance of the Proton Therapy System.
  • Ability to access and work within confined spaces and heights.
  • Standing, sitting, or stooping for extended periods of time.
  • Expected to be able to travel approximately 25%, including international, dependent on assigned location.


Note: Candidate must live within close proximity or be willing to relocate to Miami, FL. This is an on-site position that requires onsite work at local customer locations.

The base pay range for this position is 65,600.00 - 81,980.00 - 98,400.00 USD Annually; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
