June Shelton School & Evaluation Center enjoys the distinction of being the worlds largest independent school for bright children with learning differences. Founded in 1976, Shelton is dedicated to making a difference by serving and empowering the lives of students who learn differently. While the school is clearly the centerpiece of its mission, Shelton is more than a school. It encompasses three other major components, all open to the communitya speech and language therapy program, an evaluation center, and a teacher-training program. Shelton is actively involved with research and collaborates with major medical institutions in the Dallas area, including Childrens Medical Center and UT Southwestern Medical Center. The Shelton School is a co-educational, non-sectarian school that serves approximately 900 students with learning differences in grades EC to 12. The Shelton School is accredited by Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS).

Position Overview
Directs, coordinates and supervises facilities and maintenance staff and service agreement contractors. Exhibits understanding and support of the mission and goals of the School in personal conduct and management of others. Plans for future improvements to the plant to ensure strategic program objectives are met.

Qualifications & Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in related field (engineering, architectural, facilities management); Master's degree a plus
  • Eight to Ten years' experience in facilities and maintenance discipline with five (5) years management experience. Knowledge of building codes, environmental and safety regulations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in mechanical systems (HVAC, etc)
  • Experience in an educational setting is preferred. Related experience could entail construction, plant engineer, or facility management.
  • Proven personnel management skills and contractor management experience, with aptitude to judge quality of performance in all major technical trades. Technology user skills sufficient to prepare reports in Excel and Word, and aptitude to operate BAS (building automation system).
  • Communication skills (oral and written) and confidence in conveying information to all types of members of the community, including teachers, administrators, trustees, parents, students
  • Demonstrated proficiency in work order and preventive maintenance management systems; Budget creation and management
  • Ability to adapt behavior to function effectively in the institution's culture, including those specific to the school's tradition
  • Commitment to the institution's needs and readiness to respond 24/7/365 as reasonable and necessary


Essential Functions:

  • Provide Leadership in seeking funding for capital projects, developing a five-year capital plan, and managing the capital budget.
  • Provide Leadership for department personnel, including hiring, scheduling, and supervising the building and grounds staff, performance evaluation, training and development, and discipline.
  • Keeps CFO abreast of Facilities projects. Works with the Executive Director and the Leadership team to determine appropriate projects for the School.
  • Ensures timely management of all facility work orders, using established processes and/or developing new processes as appropriate.
  • Schedules and performs regular preventive maintenance on all building systems, including MEP, roofs, finishes, safety and monitoring systems, school vehicles and other equipment.
  • Selects 3rd-party maintenance contractors and manages the fulfillment of their contract obligations, including quality control of their work
  • Oversees regular cleaning of the school, supervises day custodians, and manages any contracted cleaning services.
  • Organizes, schedules and supervises all repair and construction projects, with sensitivity to school seasonality and operational need.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory requirements, including work safety regulations. Oversees inspections of all building systems as needed for compliance (boiler, fire alarms, elevators, etc.).
  • Creates annual operating budget and capital renewal (PPRRSM) budget for facilities department in conjunction with CFO and with advice of the Operational Risk Mitigation Committee, and controls facilities expenditures.
  • Develops and executes strategy for maintenance and operation of the campus.
  • Collaborates with program and staff leadership, to understand special needs and maintain quality of support to the mission (e.g. academic leaders, food service, athletics, technology, security).
  • Manages and ensures efficient and timely facilities support for all necessary campus events (e.g. setups and takedowns for large and small events as well as athletic games as needed)
  • Participates constructively in the strategic development and management of the campus (e.g. master plan, zoning compliance, utilities services, energy management)
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
