Job Description
The Executive Director is the business and operations executive responsible for planning, organizing, and directing strategy, operations, and financial performance for their respective Department. This individual will partner with the Department Chair, Medical Group executive leaders, and other senior medical center leaders to strategically align and integrate organizational goals to achieve strategic, operational, and financial objectives to achieve maximum measurable impact.
The Executive Director's primary reporting relationship will be to the assigned Lurie Children's Medical Group (LCMG) Vice President and Chief, with dotted line reporting to the Department Chair. This leader will supervise and manage departmental administrative personnel and will work closely with other medical center, research institute, and clinical leaders to effectively lead the Department.
The Department of Surgery is comprised of 10 divisions and 80+ surgeons performing over 22,000 surgical cases and 150,000+ outpatient visits per year.

Job Description

Essential Job Functions:
- Partners with the Department Chair and other institutional leaders in the operations and execution of the department's goals as it relates to budget planning, fiscal and resource planning and administration, human resource utilization, policy administration, and coordination of activities and associated funds flow with other entities. Provides strategic leadership, oversight and management over all aspects of the day-to-day administration of the department.
- Champions medical group and medical center priorities in the faculty practices, particularly with respect to initiatives in process improvement, patient access, revenue enhancement, cost containment, maximizing clinical and research productivity, and ensuring faculty, staff and patient satisfaction.
- Oversees the planning and forecasting of all financial and budgetary matters based on activity, key performance indicators and departmental needs. Monitors budget and financial performance of the department, leading action where appropriate, and provides current financial information to the LCMG Chief and Department Chair to support the successful financial management of the department.
- With the support of the LCMG Business Operations and Analytics team and aligning with the medical center's strategic plan, evaluates the need for additional faculty, staff and other resources, and develops business plans to assess the financial feasibility and operational impact of recruitment proposals. Executes short and long-term strategic business plans for the Department. Monitors and reports performance relative to stated goals and communicates and manages variances from plan.
- Provides fiscal management for medical center funds as they relate to mission support for the Department. Collaborates with the LCMG, foundation and finance teams to ensure appropriate donor stewardship reports and spending plans.
- Oversees the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures and ensures consistency of application, and alignment with those of the medical group and medical center. Develops performance standards to continually measure and evaluate efficiency and quality and develops and implements new policies/procedures or enhancements as needed.
- Responsible for the recruitment, management and development of the departmental administrative team. The size and scope may vary by department, and may include administrative professionals, supervisors, managers, directors and senior directors. The Executive Director is heavily and routinely engaged with both departmental and divisional faculty and administrative leaders.
- With the support of the LCMG Faculty and Physician Operations and Business Operations teams, directs recruitment of faculty candidates, overseeing the development and implementation of the terms of offer with regard to effort allocation, space, personnel and financial resources.
- Is accountable for the proper management of the education programs for the Department, ensuring that educational requirements are met for all learners and the programs are compliant with standards and regulations of regulatory agencies.
- Establishes and maintains working relationships with organizational peers, serves on committees, ensures that the department responds to institutional requests and completes projects in a timely fashion.
- Develops and implements systems to ensure information flow (i.e., education, staffing, quality initiatives, financials, protocols, information systems, space requirements).
- Oversees all internal/external reporting on - the Department's activities.
- Serves as a liaison with clinical staff in the Department.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Master's degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Public Health or closely related field.
- A minimum of 10 years of progressive responsibility at a managerial level, preferably in an academic medical center.
- Demonstrated understanding of the management issues in a highly complex clinical service and academic environment and ability to provide initiative, judgment and creativity in the resolution of complex problems.
- Strong financial and analytics expertise in budget forecasting, development and management.
- Demonstrated ability to identify and analyze all pertinent information/data to make and effectively communicate decisions to meet the department's current and future financial, research, academic and administrative needs.
- Effective communication/presentation skills and demonstrated track record of forming collaborative and effective working relationships with physicians and administrative leaders.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and lead staff in a changing environment.
- Ability to establish realistic and achievable priorities and the ability to lead staff to achieve departmental goals and objectives.
