The expected hiring range for this position is $70,758.00 - $110,379.55.

In this role you will:
- Design, synthesize, and evaluate next-generation metal-air batteries (Na-air battery, Zn-air battery, etc.) within the scope of the newly established Energy Storage Research Alliance (ESRA) at Argonne
- Collaborate closely with research teams of different thrusts and institutions within ESRA focusing on fundamental understanding of ion transport within confined space, surface chemistry, as well as discharge-charge mechanism of metal-air batteries
- Conduct electrode structure-property correlation studies using in situ and operando methods such as surface Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray based scattering and absorption spectroscopy methods, in addition to conventional tools such as XRD, BET, XRF, SEM, TEM, etc.
- Collaborate with computational modeling and artificial intelligence/machine learning teams to improve battery performance, using rational design approaches, and mechanistic understanding of batteries
- Disseminate project progress through research reports and presentations within and outside ESRA consortium, with strong emphasis on peer-reviewed publications
Position Requirements
- Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (within the last 0-5 years) in field(s) of chemistry, material science, or chemical engineering
- Knowledge of and experimental expertise in synthesis and preparation of metal-air battery materials and components (anode, cathode and electrolyte)
- Knowledge of and experimental expertise in fabricating and evaluating metal-air batteries using different methods, such as cell making and battery test
- Knowledge of and skill in using advanced characterization tools such as in situ Raman and synchrotron-based X-ray absorption and scattering methods
- Knowledge of and experimental expertise in general laboratory material characterization methods (e.g., XRD, BET, XRF, SEM, TEM).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork
