The Bridge Bureau provides technical expertise in bridge design, inspection, and management for the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT). Bridge Bureau engineers and technicians perform a variety of functions including bridge design and detailing, construction and safety inspections, bridge inventory management, construction services, and specification writing. The Bridge Bureau oversees every bridge in the State through all stages of its service life: preliminary and final design, initial construction and preservation/rehabilitation projects, and demolition/replacement.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrate leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
The Bridge Bureau is faced with challenges meeting ever increasing demands for more complex bridge designs, computerized three-dimensional (3D) plans, and extensive database management systems. This is compounded by increasing demands to meet Federal requirements, meet new and more complex bridge management specifications, and provide support for other management systems.
How does it get done?
This position will work in the Bridge Design Section and/or Bridge Management Section of the Bridge Bureau.
Key responsibilities of this position will include:
Bridge Design Responsibilities
1. Planning - Assist with bridge/structural project planning and project scopes.
2. Design - Assist with bridge/structural design, plan development, and cost estimates.
3. Support - Provide support/information to District offices and other NMDOT/non-NMDOT entities.
4. Review - Review shop drawings and other drawings for accuracy and contract compliance.
Bridge Management Responsibilities
1. Bridge Management - Develop expertise with NMDOT's system and perform bridge needs forecasting and other analyses.
2. Prioritization - Assist with development of lists to prioritize bridge needs.
3. Asset Management - Work with NMDOT's Asset Management Section to supply required bridge data.
4. Inspections - Assist with routine and special highway and railroad safety bridge inspections.
5. Emergency Repairs - Assist with emergency repair plan development.
6. Load Rating/Overweight Permits - Assist with bridge analysis work.
Who are the customers?
The NMDOT Districts and the traveling public.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have preferred education and/or experience in the following:
* Civil Engineering degree from an accredited university that includes structural engineering courses.
* Four (4) years of experience in bridge design, bridge inspection, construction and/or engineering. Advanced engineering coursework may be substituted on a month for month basis.
* Understand and apply complex design specifications.
* Excellent verbal and written communications skills, with the ability to write concise and accurate technical reports.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and four (4) years of engineering experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be licensed by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Field work is also required in varying weather conditions-hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, concrete powder, and environmental allergens; exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles; high volume traffic; insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, and stressful situations; interaction with public, local, county, school, and city officials by phone and in person; work is performed in the field, monthly assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays away from post of duty along with extended hours and occasional travel. Sitting/Standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
