The Opportunity:

We are recruiting a MENTAL HEALTH CLINICIAN (Seniors at Risk)

  • This is a regular full-time opportunity (35 hours per week Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) based at 80 Waterloo Ave. Guelph with travel to Wellington county.


Working within a collaborative team you will provide comprehensive mental health assessment, safety and risk assessment and intervention for vulnerable at-risk seniors and their families. The complex senior may also be living with chronic disease, complex mental health and/or addiction issues, hoarding and/or dementia. The successful incumbent will provide a mobile response based on the needs of the person, urgency and risk issues. Demonstrated ability to assist with risk mitigation and advocacy is required. This position responds to allegations of risk or elder abuse that come from individuals, community partners, health care workers or from seniors themselves. It also provides consultation to the community, client and family on issues related to elder abuse, high risk seniors, hoarding, roles and responsibilities of a substitute decision maker, the Substitute Decisions Act and Health Care Consent Act. A primary focus of this role is on community capacity building to respond to risk and referral to appropriate services for specialized expertise. This position reports to the Manager, Seniors Services.

Qualifications:

  • Masters level degree in psychology, social work or relevant health or social science field or Registered Nurse
  • Registration with relevant college/registering body
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in the provision of geriatric comprehensive assessment and mental health services with high risk seniors and their families including elder abuse as well as in-depth knowledge of complex clinical issues including hoarding
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Substitute Decisions Act and Health Care Consent Act and ability to translate this knowledge to improve the practice of community partners
  • Sound working knowledge of Ontario privacy laws as an enabler to safe quality care
  • Demonstrated ability to flag issues of capacity and provide education to community in this area
  • Ability to assess and respond to rapidly changing risk situations
  • Well-developed assessment and intervention skills specific to a seniors population with conditions such as dementia, late life mental health issues, other age related issues
  • Demonstrated ability to work with families in conflict, and mediate family dynamics issues
  • Experience and understanding of how concurrent disorders impact the lives of individuals is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in the provision of education to community partners
  • Demonstrated understanding and sensitivity to social and cultural diversity
  • Highly developed organizational, communication and problem solving skills
  • The ability to work collaboratively in a self-directed work team
  • Proficiency with MS Office, Outlook and various database software
  • Valid driver's license, vehicle and insurance, as travel is required

CLASSIFICATION AND RATE OF PAY: Level 6 (OPSEU) - $36.72 to $44.76 per hour
