Job Description

NBC News Digital is seeking Deputy Editor to help drive its Washington coverage. This person should have experience editing coverage of the White House, Congress, government agencies or all of the above. The ideal candidate is competitive and scoop-driven, who can spot and engage reporters on emerging storylines.

The goal is to drive coverage that breaks news, whether in a quick-turn piece or a deep dive. The portfolio will include breaking news, daily coverage, exclusives and enterprise pieces on the biggest storylines and players in Washington.

The Deputy Washington Editor will work closely with the Senior Washington Editor to keep track of what is going on in the Capitol and plan out coverage, making sure we aren't missing upcoming opportunities to break news and be on top of major developments.

This role requires strong collaborative and diplomatic skills. The Deputy Washington Editor works across a variety of teams at NBC News and must be able to effectively partner with reporters, correspondents, editors, producers and others to bring the best reporting onto the website.

In one day this person could assign and shepherd a piece on the White House's thinking on tariffs, bringing in reporting from across the network into a sharp and smart piece. In another, this person could be running a live blog on a major congressional hearing. In another they could be refining a reporter's story pitch or copy to make sure the article will be as strong and deep as possible.

Management experience is important. We want someone who can help reporters do their best work, grow their skills and develop their career.

Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with the Senior Washington editor to drive coverage of Washington (including the White House, Congress, federal agencies and the Supreme Court) for NBC News Digital
  • Manage several reporters and their career growth and develop their skills
  • Assign and edit news stories to ensure they are thorough, well-written, accurate and authoritative
  • Collaborate with other digital editors and staffers across the broadcast group
  • Actively monitor sources of breaking news and be prepared to jump on developments as they happen
  • Make sure stories are optimized with SEO, engaging and accurate headlines, strong ledes and visual elements to help tell our stories
  • Handle breaking news and help run live blogs
  • Share information and collaborate with all NBC News platforms in a timely fashion


Qualifications
  • 5+ years in journalism, preferably covering politics
  • Experience managing or coaching political journalists
  • Outstanding editing skills - from clean writing to an agile brainstorming mind
  • Strong communication skills
  • Expertise in writing SEO and optimizing stories for different platforms

Additional Requirements:
  • Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.
