Job Description
SGM is seeking an experienced Environmental and Water Resources Data Analyst to support the growth of a new and emerging digital technologies team for a Colorado-based engineering and surveying firm. This role involves analyzing complex environmental datasets, developing data visualizations, and informing decisions on water quality, rights, supply and demand forecasting, and ecological habitat analysis. The ideal candidate has familiarity with data management, data analysis, creating data visualizations, including database design, and web-based tool creation. Proficiency in automating data collection, transformation, and validation is essential, along with experience in unit testing and exception handling to document technical processes. Strong attention to detail and the ability to enhance stakeholder communication through custom web tools and databases are highly valued. - Making recommendations for adding new data processing and visualization tools.
- Data Analysis and Visualization: Utilize programming languages such as R and Python to analyze large environmental and water quality datasets.
- Developing clear and informative data visualizations to effectively communicate findings to stakeholders (ESRI, Jupyter, Notebook, Charts, etc.).
- Building required database infrastructure for ETL of data from various sources such as GIS databases, csv files, and REST APIs.
- Data Management: Collect, organize, and maintain diverse environmental data sets, ensuring data integrity and accessibility for analysis. Automating process for collecting, reviewing and storing data. Experience designing and maintaining relational databases using SQL. Developing database documentation, including creating entity relationship diagrams.
- Collaboration: Work closely with hydrologists, engineers, and other team members to interpret data and support water resource management projects.
- Reporting: Prepare detailed reports summarizing data analyses, methodologies, and recommendations for internal use and external stakeholders.
- GIS Mapping: Create and interpret GIS maps to support spatial analysis of water resources and environmental data.
Salary
- $80,000 - $105,000 DOE
Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in environmental science, water resources, hydrology, or a related field. Data Science classwork completed demonstrating knowledge of the foundations of data science, principles and techniques of data science, data structures, discrete math and probability, or intro level machine learning.
- A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in natural resources, water resources, water rights, and water quality analysis using data science principles and tools to implement projects.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in data analysis and visualization using R and Python.
- Experience with GIS software for mapping and spatial analysis.
- Familiarity with water rights regulations and water quality assessment methods.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex data in a clear and accessible manner.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to data accuracy and consistency.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to approach complex environmental challenges with analytical and innovative solutions.
- Master's degree in a relevant data science and natural resources or water resources program.
- Experience with the Colorado Decision Support Systems (CDSS) and familiarity with Colorado's water laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of additional data analysis tools and programming languages.
- Software version control using Git.
