Working alongside the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) General Office (GO) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) personnel, the North Region Division advances NMDOT projects through both internal design efforts and consultant oversight. The North Region Division also provides oversight on local agency projects that use federal funding for design and construction activities. The North Region Division is based out of the Santa Fe NMDOT General Office and is comprised of professional engineers, technicians, and administrative support staff.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrate leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
The position assists the Project Development Engineer (PDE) with better performance-based results, as defined in the current NMDOT/FHWA Stewardship and Oversight Agreement. This position is the third level of the Engineering Series which performs professional engineering work with both standard and varied assignments of a moderate to complex nature. The person in this position independently evaluates, selects, and adapts standard techniques, procedures, and criteria and uses these to complete job assignments and may work on a major project or several projects of moderate scope with complex features.
How does it get done?
The position assists in production of quality plans, on schedule, within budget, and per design criteria established by state and federal guidelines. Other duties include contract administration, as directed by the Project Development Engineer, pertaining to negotiated engineering contracts, as well as maintaining contact with New Mexico Department of Transportation support personnel during construction of assigned projects. Additional responsibilities will include:
* Development of constructible designs will need to comply with standards and specifications requirements for various stages of project reviews up to bidding.
* Develop project scope with technical staff, design/ construction team members, and other organizations as applicable.
* Conduct field visits on projects during design and construction, and communicate conditions with senior engineers, agencies, communities and consultants as required.
* Review and evaluate proposals submitted in response to agency Request For Proposals (RFP).
* Initiate consulting service requests with on-call consultants to prepare analysis and design work required for projects issues.
* Tracking consultant progress to meet purpose for the design of the project and verify the engineering estimate of construction and design is within the department's budget.
* Sign and seal with professional engineering seal all final, specific project related contracts, plans and reports.
* Review plans, develop design contracts, develop construction contracts, participate in interim and final construction inspections, respond to requests for change orders, and participate in administrative closeout of publicly funded construction projects.
Who are the customers?
New Mexico Department of Transportation North Region Design, District 4 and District 5, as well as the General public.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have preferred experience in the following:
* Providing project designs that meet current highway and bridge design standards.
* Preparation of project schedules for all assigned projects.
* Management of consultant tasks to ensure projects are completed on-time and on-budget.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and four (4) years of engineering experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be licensed by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Employment requires successful completion of pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
Business reference check and Driver's License verification are required.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Field work is also required in varying weather conditions-hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, concrete powder, and environmental allergens; exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles; high volume traffic; insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, and stressful situations; interaction with public, local, county, school, and city officials by phone and in person; work is performed in the field on occasion, assignments periodically require travel and extended overnight stays away from post of duty along with extended hours and occasional travel. Sitting/Standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
