Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is looking to add to our Underwriting leadership team and has a new opportunity for a Manager Underwriting. This position is responsible for leading a team of underwriting staff in assessing and managing risk while supporting business growth and financial stability. This role emphasizes ensuring compliance with underwriting guidelines, fostering collaboration across departments, and driving operational excellence. This position is responsible for overseeing the evaluation, analysis, and continuous improvement of underwriting guidelines and practices.

Compensation

$112,800 - $134,000

Exempt Grade 18
  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas offers excellent competitive compensation with the goal of retaining and growing talented team members. The compensation range for this role is a good faith estimate, it is estimated based on what a successful candidate might be paid. All offers presented to candidates are carefully reviewed to ensure fair, equitable pay by offering competitive wages that align with the individual's skills, education, experience, and training. The range may vary above or below the stated amounts.


What you'll do

  • Team Leadership: Manage the Underwriting team, including a supervisor and analysts, ensuring workload balance, goal alignment, and professional development.
  • Risk Assessment: Oversee underwriting decisions to ensure accurate evaluation of risk and compliance with corporate and regulatory guidelines.
  • Collaboration: Partner with Sales, Rating, Actuarial, and other departments to develop underwriting strategies that align with organizational objectives.
  • Policy Oversight: Ensure adherence to underwriting eligibility, participation, and enrollment guidelines, supporting acquisition and retention goals for group and individual business.
  • Training and Development: Mentor team members, enhancing their technical knowledge, decision-making skills, and overall performance.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and implement opportunities to streamline underwriting processes and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Communication: Serve as a key point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, addressing escalated issues and ensuring clear, consistent communication.
  • Reporting: Provide regular updates to leadership on team performance, risk trends, and underwriting outcomes.


What you need

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of six years of experience in underwriting or related field, preferably in the health insurance industry.
  • Experience in managing team workflows, process improvements, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to work in an office environment and use standard office equipment.
  • Occasional travel may be required for meetings or training.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to manage and motivate a diverse team.
  • Deep understanding of underwriting principles, risk assessment methodologies, and industry regulations.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in underwriting systems and tools, as well as Microsoft Office applications.
