Client Relations Director - Information Governance & Records Management

Are you an experienced leader in records management and information governance looking to make a meaningful impact in a prestigious law firm? We are seeking a Client Relations Director to oversee the full lifecycle of records management, ensuring compliance, security, and efficiency in handling electronic and physical records.

About the Role:

As the Client Relations Director, you will play a critical role in managing the firm's records programs, overseeing file transfers, and implementing policies that align with best practices and regulatory requirements. You will collaborate closely with senior leadership, including Co-General Counsel and Privacy and Data Security teams, to enhance the firm's information governance efforts.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the lifecycle of records management, ensuring smooth transitions for lawyer arrivals and departures, client file transfers, and internal retrieval processes.
  • Monitor and enhance the firm's records management programs, ensuring efficiency, security, and compliance with firm policies and regulatory standards.
  • Evaluate and classify eligible records, ensuring appropriate retention, destruction, or permanent storage.
  • Develop and implement records retention and risk management policies in partnership with the Co-General Counsel.
  • Collaborate with Privacy and Data Security teams to ensure compliance with data protection laws and client-specific requirements.
  • Manage third-party vendor relationships, including off-site storage and records management software.
  • Provide strategic recommendations on software enhancements and troubleshooting for records management applications.
  • Work closely with legal teams to support Legal/Administrative Holds and ensure secure data handling.
  • Stay ahead of industry best practices, providing training to attorneys and staff as needed.
  • Lead and develop the Information Governance and Records department team.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Management, Information Technology, Library Science, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in records management, preferably in a law firm.
  • Supervisory experience is required.
  • Knowledge of electronic records management systems and industry best practices.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements and risk management in records governance.
  • Information Governance Professional (IGP) certification or CIPP/US data privacy qualification is desirable.
  • Exceptional strategic, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with attorneys, clients, and external partners.
  • A detail-oriented, risk-management mindset with a commitment to process improvement.
