What you will be doing:

Engineering Associate and Engineering Assistant 3:
  • Preliminary design in support of environmental documents and studies by assessing ROW and utility impacts, defining the project footprint, planning traffic control, evaluating construction impacts, and assisting environmental analysis.
  • Detailed design and preparation of reports, maps, and/or detailed, bid-ready plans and specifications and contracts for M&O Support with medium to high levels of complexity. Design includes various elements like guardrails, signs, drainage, and pavement, following standards and technical input.
  • Provide field administration in the role of Project engineer and management of inspectors as needed to help administer, do quality checks and support M&O staff. Field administration may be required at both on and off-road systems.
  • Assist with public involvement by meeting stakeholders, preparing presentations, addressing comments, and researching inquiries.
  • Independently administer various Department of Transportation contracts through both supply and construction methods in support of and in compliance with various state and Federal programs.

  • Professionally seal all engineering documents that they prepare and may be asked to oversee the work of unlicensed design staff and professionally seal documents they prepare.

Who we are looking for: We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

Minimum Qualifications
Engineering Assistant 3

Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
AND
Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitutions:
Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree.
Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).
Engineering Associate

Eight years of progressively responsible work experience in engineering, land surveying or architecture, of which one year was as an Engineering Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:
ABET accredited college or technical school courses in engineering, architecture, land surveying or a closely related curriculum may be substituted for the non-specific required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month). A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET may substitute for four years of the non-specific required experience.
Engineer/Architect 1
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect.
Note: Positions in this class require professional registration as either an Engineer or an Architect. The employer will designate which professional field is required for each position.

Special Note:
Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. It may be filled at the Engineering Assistant 3, Engineering Associate, or Engineer/Architect 1 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at a lower level, promotion to the higher level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
