The Opportunity

The position of Senior Engineering Technician is within our Toxicology Business Unit located in San Diego, California.

Under general supervision, Senior Engineering Technicians will be able to troubleshoot and repair most complex issues with plant-wide automated and manual manufacturing equipment. Senior Engineering Technicians will be able to identify inherent equipment issues and create/implement solutions. The position will work with Engineers and vendors to integrate new equipment and assist in the execution of equipment validations (FAT, SAT, IQ, OQ, and PQ). Senior Engineering Technicians will be able to perform preventative, corrective, and breakdown maintenance on all Abbott production equipment.

What You'll Work On
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and operational issues in manufacturing and laboratories.
  • Lead and implement improvements and innovative problem-solving methods.
  • Handle hazardous materials as required.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in preventative maintenance and assembly-related repairs.
  • Maintain procedures and records per company standards; provide necessary reports to management.
  • Recommend specifications and procedures for equipment.
  • Communicate unexpected equipment downtime and delays impacting production efficiencies.
  • Conduct technical experiments to test and analyze new and existing processes and equipment.
  • Complete assigned engineering projects successfully.
  • Plan, coordinate, install, and perform operational checkouts for equipment and processes.
  • Train new personnel on equipment maintenance procedures and policies.
  • Generate and update manufacturing engineering documentation.
  • Provide technical support for complex equipment projects.
  • Assist with equipment validations (FAT, SAT, IQ, OQ, PQ).
  • Use Agile PLM to execute Quality Incidents and CAPAs related to maintenance/technical processes.
  • Ensure OEE metrics are maintained monthly.
  • Commit to the development, implementation, and effectiveness of the Abbott Quality Management System per ISO, FDA, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Understand federal regulations and company requirements.
  • Be aware of quality consequences from improper job performance and device defects in their area of responsibility.
  • Exhibit professional behavior with internal/external business associates, reflecting positively on the company.
  • Build productive internal/external working relationships.
  • Comply with established business policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on business needs.


Required Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or Certificate in a Technical Discipline.
  • Five years of experience in a semi-automated to automated manufacturing environment.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working in a GMP environment.
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing systems (documentation, compliance, inventory control, production scheduling/controls, etc.).
  • MS Office Suite experience.
  • Experience in a work environment with direct responsibility for equipment operation.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Electrical Engineering/Electronics Technician Certificate.
  • Experience with pneumatically operated pick-and-place mechanisms and programming logic for automated manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with PLC programming and Vision Inspection systems.
  • Experience with Lean/Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, CAD, and JMP software.
  • Experience with the design of experiments (DOE).

The base pay for this position is
$34.75 - $69.55/hour
In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
