Northrop Grumman Defense Systems sector (NGDS) is seeking a Sr. Principal Military Trainer - Chief Analyst Trainer in support of the Joint Staff J7, Deployable Training Division (DTD) in Suffolk, Virginia. This position requires a Top Secret/SCI clearance and extensive travel as a member of Deployable Training Teams (DTTs). The selected candidate will provide direct support to the Joint Staff J7, DTT Team Chiefs and Observer / Analyst Trainers (ATs) in their mission of conducting joint and multi-national training. The Chief AT will provide senior military analytical research and mentoring for preparatory and support activities throughout the Joint Event Life Cycle to include planning conferences, academic seminars, event execution, product development, and post-event analysis. The Chief AT is responsible for aiding assigned Observer/Analyst Trainers in preparing for exercises and SAVs, to include development of collection plans, in-briefs, and academic seminars, analyzing organizational performance, and developing inputs to after action reviews and reports. This position supports opportunities for education and training for joint commanders and their staffs, and focuses on the joint and combined operational and strategic levels of war.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists Combatant Commanders, Joint Task Force Commanders, and other Joint Force commanders with readiness and training by providing joint matters education and training focused at the operational and strategic levels of war
  • Participates in joint and multi-national training, exercises, and operational staff assist visits
  • Supports individual, staff, and unit collective training, academic seminars, senior leader seminars, planning exercises, table-top exercises, and functional workshops
  • Executes joint mission rehearsals, command post exercises, and other collective training events
  • DTD training is grounded in joint doctrine, but is focused primarily on the sharing of joint insights and best practices
  • Supports active duty and government civilian Observer Trainers and contract Analyst Trainers as they provide over-the-shoulder training with joint commands to enhance readiness
  • Collects and analyzes observations used to provide feedback to the commander and staff in the form of functional-level feedback, facilitated after-action reviews, and commander's summary reports
  • Utilizes the Continuum of Learning (CoL) approach to support individual and staff training
  • Provides tailored and distributed individual training for key objectives and competencies, augmented through focused staff-training events using staff-training tools
  • Develops training and educationally-focused research design, training outcomes, and measurements and assessments of live and virtual blended training and learning environments
  • Provides executive-level support to National Defense University's Senior Leader Education (SLE) program, which includes Pinnacle as well as the Chairman's Capstone and Keystone programs
  • Facilitates product development in support of the Joint Lessons Learned Program through the Joint Lessons Learned Information System or other programs of record
  • Contributes to the continuing development of Joint Doctrine and publishes focus papers in functional areas of interest


Additional Duties:

  • Directly supports the DTT Team Chief and Senior Mentor
  • Conducts in-depth research, analysis, and training to support the Joint Force commander's readiness and exercise programs
  • Provides over-the-shoulder training during joint force exercises, training events, and staff assist visits to Joint Force commanders and their staffs
  • Assists flag/general officer commanders and principal staff members in understanding and synchronizing operations in international, whole-of-government operating environments
  • Conducts in-depth research and analysis in preparation for exercises, provides functional after-action reviews, and supports the DTT Team Chief in preparing the Commander's Facilitated After-action Review and Commander's Summary Report
  • Develops and delivers facilitated seminars for the Senior Leader Education (i.e., Pinnacle, Capstone, and Keystone) Joint Operations Modules
  • Conceptualizes, develops, and assesses the operational aspects of joint doctrine, joint tactics, techniques, procedures, and related publications
  • Provides inputs to the development and publication of joint doctrine, including review of all joint doctrine updates
  • Develops and updates functional-area focus papers and other articles for professional publications
  • Provides mentorship and support to active duty and government civilian Observer Trainers across all functional areas within the DTD, including preparation for academics, exercises, staff assist visits, and provides analytic support during academics, exercises, and staff assist visits (SAVs)


Basic Qualifications:

  • One of the following:
    • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 10 years of strategic (national) and/or operational (regional) experience with one or more joint functional areas (e.g. operational planning and assessment, command and control, current operations, information sharing, intelligence, sustainment, cyberspace operations, interagency/inter-organizational coordination, operational law and authorities, lethal and non-lethal fires and effects and information operations, integrated air and missile defense, and knowledge management
    • Master's degree with a minimum of 8 years of strategic and/or regional experience with one or more joint functional areas
    • PhD with a minimum of 5 years of strategic and/or regional experience with one or more joint functional areas
  • In-depth expertise in joint deliberate and crisis planning, the commander's decision-making process, and mission command
  • Must be willing to travel to support world-wide (to include areas considered hazardous duty) training events as needed (up to 25% of the time)
  • Joint Forces Staff College or Service equivalent graduate
  • Experience as an Observer Trainer or Analyst Trainer in the DTD can be counted toward years of experience and other basic qualifications
  • Must have an active U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Secret security clearance with the ability to obtain a Top Secret / Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) clearance if hired
  • Must be able to pass a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information
  • Must be able to work on-site in Suffolk, Virginia


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree plus 15 years of experience in planning and/or executing military operations, or Doctoral degree plus 8 years of experience in planning and/or executing military operations
  • Combatant Command, Joint Task Force, Joint Staff, Functional or Service Component, Division, Afloat Staff or Wing, command or staff knowledge and experience
  • In depth knowledge and experience with Joint Force command and control procedures and battle staff processes at the strategic and operational levels of warfare, to include knowledge management processes, operations center activities, commander's decision cycle, mission command concept, and inter-organizational dynamics
  • Experience in collecting and presenting written and oral lessons learned.
  • Experience in preparing and delivering seminars for general/flag officers or civilian equivalents
  • Ability to research and write at a doctoral level
  • Ability to write at a publishable level, demonstrated communication skills, and experience in problem analysis and resolution
  • Experience with joint operational planning efforts at the operational and strategic levels


Salary Range: $93,800.00 - $140,800.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
