This position will be site based in Fair Lawn, NJ site, and will support our Laboratory Chemicals Division (LCD Operations) business unit of Thermo Fisher Scientific.

As part of our team, The Manufacturing Automation Engineer will design, build and deploy automated systems for use in a production and manufacturing environment. You will collaborate with departmental and corporate leadership to resolve existing automation capabilities and future opportunities, creating detailed project road maps for automation projects that support our business objectives.
A Day in the Life:
- Participate in and potentially lead a growing team of engineers to accomplish multiple automation projects of various sizes and priority levels.
- Work with site leaders and collaborators to identify automation opportunities, develop return on investment, and implement projects.
- Plan, lead, and coordinate automation projects to improve manufacturing process productivity, quality and safety.
- Hands-on experience with PLC programming including but not limited to Rockwell, B&R, and Siemens.
- Develop user requirements, specifications, and testing documentation for automated manufacturing equipment.
- Develop and implement test plans for commissioning and qualification of automated systems.
- Commission, Qualification, and Validation activities - requirements, protocol generation, and execution.
- Develop risk management documentation.
- Create detailed road maps to guide automation projects from conception to final implementation.
- Research, design and implement automation technology as it pertains to our processes.
- Communication with suppliers and internal customers about project details.
- Support existing automation technology with component and process upgrades
- Write detailed automation and equipment specifications to drive the vendor RFP, selection, and validation process.
- Work with a team to enhance and update existing equipment.
- Visit vendors and attend tradeshows to stay ahead of automation technology.
- Ensure automation technology and standard methodologies are brought to bear across multiple sites.
- Support design and manufacturing engineering teams in improving product designs and processes for automation.
Keys to Success:
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical or Mechatronics engineering or equivalent experience.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 2 - 4 years of experience in process automation or related role, including project management required.
- Experience in manufacturing and machine design required.
- Experience with automation components/controls, PLC's / HMI's, robotics, sensors and vision inspection required.
- Experience leading high value capital projects to drive process improvement and meet operational goals preferred.
- Experience with the design and implementation of automated manufacturing process equipment required.
- Experience with controllers, sensors and actuators.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Eager ownership attitude to "get it done" and willingness to be hands-on.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office; working knowledge of 3D CAD (SolidWorks).
- Ability to work with and lead external automation vendors, OEM's, contractors, etc.
