Summary
The Deputy Building Official assists in directing and coordinating all activities relating to the division and the related staff. The position ensures that the health and safety of the public is maintained through adherence to the requirements established by law in the construction, alteration, or use of every building within the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manages Planning Techs and Plans Examiners, set goals, and delegates assignments
- Manages and reviews permit process and facilitates improvements
- Assists with building code and certificate of occupancy amendments
- Collaborates with Chief Building Official, Director, and Inspectors to implement efficiencies and improve processes
- Develops and trains staff and monitors activities for quality and efficiency
- Facilitate timely review and processing of permits and coordinates with relevant departments as needed
- Coordinates and assigns staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage and maximum productivity
- Facilitates communication between Permits, Inspections, Planning, and other department staff
- Manages public inquiry on development processes, codes, ordinances, and permit requirements
- Coordinates and ensures the maintenance and upgrading of related technological systems, software and / or databases in assigned area of responsibility
- Assists with budget process and oversees the financial activities in support of departmental operations including fee collection and maintaining escrow accounts
- Prepares presentations, presents to community, boards and commissions and City Council
- Follows city policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Combination of education and experience equivalent to Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, or related field
- Three (3) years of experience as a building official, lead inspector or closely related area
- Two (2) years of experience in a managerial role
Preferred Qualifications
- Supervisory experience with a municipal government
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
- Valid driver's License
- ICC Certified Building Inspector
- ICC Certified Building Official Designation (preferred)
- Texas State Plumbing Inspection License/TSPBE (preferred)
