Manager Civil Structural - Engineering Excellence

The Functional Manager is a member of the Engineering Excellence, responsible leading a group of Civil SMEs and engineers / analyst and designers engaged in design activities such as specifications, design, structural analysis, procurement, verification and validation related to Civil Structures. The Functional Manager will report functionally to the Director, Process, Mechanical, Civil and ICE Engineering.

Your role within the team:
  • Defining the structure of the team, including reporting relationships.
  • Maintaining a capability profile of the team, including individual experience and skills,
  • Identifying gaps in the size or technical capabilities of the team relative to forecast requirements and develops and executes a plan to close those gaps through a combination of hiring, releasing and developing staff.
  • Hiring and releasing staff, secondees and contractors from the team, as required.
  • Expediting negotiations between Technical Managers to optimize the allocation of staff
  • Mentoring of staff to maintain and improve staff performance and department technical capabilities.
  • Ensuring all training and qualification records are up-to-date, and required training and qualifications are completed/updated on time.
  • Tracking, analyzing and developing plans to improve department targeted KPI.
  • Providing clear expectations and performance measures, meaningful feedback, recognizes and rewards achievements, and takes disciplinary steps when warranted.
  • Developing and managing Performance Objectives, Individual Development Plans, Training Plan, Knowledge Transfer Plan and Succession Plan.
  • Develops and implements corrective measures to improve the performance of individuals.
  • Responsible for human resources issues and effectively manages and resolves any such issues, working as appropriate with Technical Managers.
  • Provides day-to-day interpretation and application of the negotiated agreements with bargaining agents as they affect the rights, obligations, and working conditions of employees.
  • Coordinating and oversight of Civil Structural Design activities related to the completion of fundamental design for a nuclear power plant.
  • Working with assigned staff to find optimal solutions to project challenges.
  • Providing technical guidance to staff, as appropriate.
  • Ensuring that work is conducted in accordance with applicable Engineering and Quality Assurance procedures, and in accordance with the contract, applicable specifications, codes and standards and technical requirements.
  • Interfacing with stakeholders, including Engineering peers, vendors, to ensure system designs meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements, and that the resulting designs are constructable, operable, and maintainable.
  • Ensuring department deliverables are produced in accordance with budget, schedule, quality, and technical requirements.
  • Removing barriers that could impact safety, quality, cost, and schedule performance.
  • Participating in the preparation of commercial proposals and approving the technical content of proposals prepared under their direction.
  • Forecasting resource demands for the assigned work scope, including required skills, capabilities, and durations.
  • Taking lead on new initiatives and driving innovation.

The ideal candidate:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, or related field from an accredited university.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario with good standing, or eligible within six (6) months.
  • Experience in nuclear and/or CANDU technology e is an asset.
  • 10 or more years of experience leading engineering teams.
  • Experience managing engineering work with interfacing requirements involving other engineering teams (Mechanical, Electrical, Human Factors etc.), Procurement, Quality Assurance, Contracts, and Construction.
  • Experience working within a Quality Management System (CSA N286), and quality standards (CSA N299).
  • Working knowledge of/experience with the CSA standards pertaining to Civil /Structural Engineering and other applicable standards and nuclear regulatory guides.
  • Experience delivering an overall plant control system design of a power production facility.
  • Experience in Civil Structural Design, Analysis and assessments.
  • Experience in Seismic Analysis, Wind Analysis and Tornado Analysis is an asset.
  • Commercial acumen, with experience in procurement, contracts, supply chain, and/or logistics.
  • Experience and capability in regulatory communications in a regulated industry is an asset.
  • Proven track record of performance in a multidiscipline, dynamic, project delivery environment.
  • Experience and knowledge of Civil Analysis software such as STAAD PRO, SAP 2000, ANSYS and RIVET is an asset.
  • Experience working in a nuclear facility licensed in Canada is an asset.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational and people management skills.

    • Willing to travel to and potentially work at sites to meet business needs, inclusive of project (construction) site and equipment / component suppliers. (Note: the main work location will be our Mississauga location, based on a combination of project requirements and employee preference).
    • Security Clearance with Public Services and Procurement Canada is a condition of employment.
