Position Information
The City of Pittsburg seeks an Engineering Technician I for the Engineering Division in the Public Works Department.
Engineering Technician I is the journey level class responsible for performing routine traffic, design and permit counter duties under close supervision of more experienced staff. The Engineering Technician I perform tasks and duties including evaluating work of staff responsible for providing technical engineering assistance to all City Departments, private engineers, other public agencies, developers and the general public; ensures safe work practices, work quality and accuracy; serves as a technical resource for assigned staff; and perform other duties as required.

About the Engineering Division
The Engineering Division in the Public Works Department ensures City owned facilities such as streets, storm drain systems, water distribution networks, sewer collection facilities and improvements are constructed where needed and improvements meet appropriate standards. Staff also designs and constructs City projects, assures development projects meet City requirements, manage traffic related issues and improvements like signals, process and issue permits for encroachments within the public property, site grading, parking permits and wide loads permits, and maintains all necessary records.
Examples of Duties
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Assist in preparing engineering estimates; assists Project Engineer in design and drafting of Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) projects; assist design staff in surveying, data gathering and field assignments or inspections; perform updates to standard plans and specifications.
Assist in binding, packaging and mailing contract bid proposals and contract documents to builder exchanges; operate blueprint machine and xerox machine for print copies.
Assist engineering traffic in counting traffic volume and placing traffic counters; assist Traffic Section with traffic signals.
Assist engineering records with assessment districts, annexations, subdivisions, minor subdivisions and single parcels; perform preliminary file cleaning for engineering records; assist engineering records with flood zone and flood zone verification certificates and filing of engineering documents.
Assist with reading and understanding assessor parcel map books; assist with checking and writing legal descriptions and draft plot maps.
Perform update to city base maps (parcels), city infrastructure (sewer, water and storm drain systems), and city 300, 600 and 800 scale base maps; performs major duties using Facility Mapping System (FMS) and AutoCad; develop data bases; assist with implementation of Geographical Information System (GIS).
Respond to questions and concerns from the general public; provide information as is appropriate and resolve Engineering Division service complaints; assist the public at the counter with most engineering record requests and questions.
Support Development Division, when needed, with plan reviews, field inspections, and permitting support under direction of senior staff.
Represent the City with dignity, integrity, and the spirit of cooperation in all relations with staff and the public.
Foster an environment that embraces integrity, service, inclusion and collaboration.
Be an integral team player, which involves flexibility, cooperation, and communication.

Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Principles of engineering, and algebra and trigonometry; surveying techniques and practices Terminology, methods, practices and techniques of drafting.
Modern office practices, methods and procedures; computer and equipment used for reproducing maps, charts and other graphics, relevant software programs, including entering data and printing files.
Oral and written communication skills; business English including vocabulary, spelling, and correct grammatical usage and punctuation.
Safe work practices.
Principles and practices of excellent customer service.

Ability to:
Read and understand plans and maps.

Education: Possession of the equivalent to an associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in engineering or another field of study applicable to the responsibilities and requirements of this job class.
Experience: Two years of progressively responsible experience performing engineering related work is required.
Special Requirements: Possession at the time of hire and continued maintenance of a valid California Class C driver's license is required
