Job Summary

The Optics and Applied Physics group at Triple Ring Technologies is looking for an experimental scientist/engineer to take on a key role within our advanced R&D efforts.

Triple Ring develops technology, intellectual property, and products across a range of applications, including medical imaging, medical devices, drug delivery, in-vitro technologies, and sustainability. As a member of our Optics and Applied Physics team, you will work on optical equipment for medical and other applications. You can contribute in a number of ways:
  • Experimentation. We use our experimental skills to master cutting-edge apparatus, devices, and instruments. Hands-on experience with experimental equipment, in particular with optical systems, is expected.
  • Analysis, model building, system integration. We perform a wide range of analysis on the resulting data that includes mathematical and computational models. We also simulate various parts of the devices we work on. Experience in data analysis and simulations are expected.
  • Algorithm development. One important aspect of our work is algorithm development. This work is usually related to control a device or processing of the data. Experience in signal processing and statistical analysis is preferred.
  • Product-level thinking. While we usually enter the development very early in process, it is important that we have in mind that we are ultimately developing a product. We need to answer the question on what is really needed for the product, how does it fit in our clients vision, and how much budget is allocated. Often our clients are not after the best solution but the solution that is good enough to do the job.
  • Communication with coworkers and clients. The work we do always requires explanation, either to coworkers, clients, or, usually, both. Our coworkers, representing the full range of scientific, engineering, and business disciplines, depend upon us to make our results useful to them in their work. With our clients, we usually find ourselves operating at or beyond the limits of their own understanding. It is by being both deep and gentle in our communication that our clients develop the trust that is needed for them to allow us to develop their products. Proficient written and oral communication skills are both necessary and prized.
  • Team work. We typically work in project teams with members from different disciplines. We value the ability to work collegially in a team. Project teams typically range from 2 to 20 people, and you will be expected to take on both technical contributor and technical lead roles, depending on the needs of the project.

  • This opportunity will build upon your desire both to work on applied projects for the benefit of others (coworkers, clients, and end-users) and to communicate the meaning of your work in the most effective way possible.

    Responsibilities
    • Translate client/user requirements to a coherent set of system requirements
    • Write requirements for optical subsystems. Work with mechanical, electrical, and software teams to ensure that corresponding requirements for those subsystems are defined
    • Design, build, and test optical subsystems to meet defined requirements or find limits of performance; develop detailed mathematical models for optical performance
    • Interact with mechanical, electrical, and software teams to negotiate tradeoffs and define appropriate system partitioning to meet overall performance, schedule, and cost targets
    • Design and build systems to demonstrate feasibility; perform bench testing
    • Define and execute verification test procedures
    • Calculate photon budgets to estimate key performance factors
    • Perform hands-on lab work to integrate subsystems, bring up and debug prototype optical instruments
    • Write reports describing system performance, gaps with respect to requirements, and approaches and plans to address deficiencies
    • Present findings to client, and manage client expectations
    • Participate in business development calls with prospective clients in order to present Triple Ring's expertise
    • Scope projects, estimate budgets, and write proposals for prospective clients in an independent and timely manner
    • Engage in outreach activities (such as writing case studies, attending conferences, etc.)

    Education, Experience, and Skills
    • Ph.D. in a scientific discipline (i.e. Physics, STEM) with a minimum of 5+ years related experience; or Master's degree with 6+ years; or equivalent work experience
    • Experience working in an R&D environment
    • Proven ability to build, debug, and operate complex experimental optical systems
    • Experience analyzing measured and simulated data in MATLAB or Python
    • Experience using Zemax OpticsStudio for the design and tolerancing of optical assemblies (preferred)
    • Project management experience including planning, budgeting, and scheduling prospective projects
    • Great interpersonal and communication skills

Our benefit program includes: flexible time off, paid holidays, 401(k) plan with employer match, bonus, equity, a variety of medical, dental and vision plan options, and more.
