Provides clinical and didactic instruction of students in Nurse Anesthetist program. Supervises clinical activities of students and evaluates their progress. Works as Nurse Anesthetist in addition to education responsibilities. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior. Works under supervision of the Clinical Director of Anesthesia Services and the Chief CRNA. Supervises activities of students in Nurse Anesthetist program.

Responsibilities

  • Administers anesthesia for surgical, dental, obstetrical and off-site procedures. Assists in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and cardio-version services to patients of Medical Center. Studies physical findings of pre-operative examination and determines appropriate anesthetic plan of care for patients.
  • Administers fluid, blood and drugs. Starts intravenous lines and invasive monitoring lines as needed.
  • Constantly monitors depth of anesthesia and patient's vital signs such as blood pressure, spO2 respiration, and pulse peri-operatively and intra-operatively. Keeps surgeon informed of patient's condition and reports abnormal effects to anesthesiologists.
  • Makes post-operative visits for patient's reaction and assesses need for further therapy.
  • Continues contacts with physicians, anesthesiologists, and nurses in operating rooms, recovery rooms and obstetrics to ensure patient comfort, safety, and satisfaction.
  • Provides didactic and clinical instruction to student anesthetists. Prepares class outlines and lesson plans. Discusses each case with student before administering anesthesia to patient. Provides written evaluation reports of student performance to Anesthesia Education Coordinator or designee. Provides clinical supervision to anesthesia students within Medical Center.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with surgeons, department members and nursing personnel.
  • Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react effectively and treat (if appropriate) the unique needs of patient age groups served.
  • Performs other related duties as required. Utilizes new improvements and/or technology that relate to job assignment.


  • Qualifications

  • Certificate or Baccalaureate degree in Anesthesia Education. Master's degree in Anesthesia Education preferred.
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing and an accredited School of Anesthesia. Certified BLS provider specializing in Basic Life Support credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross obtained within 18 months prior to hire date or job transfer date or Certified Instructor.
  • Thorough knowledge of administration and effects of anesthesia.
  • Knowledge of standard operating room techniques and procedures.
  • Skill in administration of all types of approved anesthetics and in checking and caring for the equipment used.
  • Sufficient strength to move patients from operating room bed to patient bed.
  • Adequate vision to read monitors and medication labels.
  • Ability to walk unaided for transport of critical patients to intensive care units while providing ventilation, moving the bed and necessary equipment to transport patients to recovery.
  • Ability to hear monitor alarms and requests from the anesthesia team, operating team, or surgeon.
  • Ability to restrain combative patients in the operating room.
  • Ability to verbally communicate with the anesthesia team, operating room team, and surgeon for routine and emergency matters.
  • Ability to teach complex clinical and didactic material to others effectively.
  • Ability to conform to departmental performance standards.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers, students, other Medical Center employees, patients, and public.
  • NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Current license to practice in Michigan as Registered Nurse. Current certification as Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist by the Council on Certification. Current Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Credentials and certification must be maintained throughout employment or the employee may be terminated. Must be credentialed through the medical staff office as an allied health practitioner for medical staff privileges.
