General Summary

The Ready Mix District Technical Services Manager position manages quality control processes designed to ensure continuous production of high quality Ready Mix Concrete in the safest manner possible for the assigned district. Expectations are that the concrete be consistent with established standards, customer specifications and production goals. The position supervises the district tech services team which may include Area Tech Services Managers and/or Tech Services Technicians and a concrete laboratory.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Responsible for ensuring that Martin Marietta safety and environmental policies are maintained as they relate to tech services activities
  • Works with the TECHNICAL SERVICES Management Team to develop quality control objectives. Responsible for implementing, and auditing, those objectives at local concrete plants in the assigned District.
  • Responsible for managing TECHNICAL SERVICES staff and activities, including but not limited to: scheduling and training of technicians, calibration and maintenance of TECHNICAL SERVICES equipment and facilities, and review and communication of test results.
  • Ensures all necessary material testing is completed, documented into the appropriate TECHNICAL SERVICES software, and reviewed in a timely manner. Upon review of data, results shall be communicated to the necessary people (sales/operations/customers) as needed to address reporting compliance, assist with and/or troubleshoot production processes, maintain product quality and consistency, and maintain the lowest possible material cost.
  • Coordinates with sales/estimators, operations and dispatch to establish production targets that consistently meet customer specifications, as well as conducting investigations necessary to resolve any product/customer related issues.
  • Interacts frequently with operations/production groups at the concrete plants to resolve process and quality issues, along with developing a better understanding of the equipment and processes used to make the products. Will provide recommended plant adjustments to maintain or improve product quality as needed.
  • Meets with specifying entities on a regular basis to maintain good relationships and awareness of changes in industry standards. Responsible for developing rapport with those entities to drive specification changes, as necessary, to support sound concrete QA practices in the field.
  • In conjunction with the sales team, meet with customers frequently to get a better understanding of their needs. Provide training where necessary to correct concrete placing and finishing practices. Adjust mixes, within allowable internal and external guidelines and specifications, to meet specific needs they may have on specialized projects.
  • Provide project support for sales/estimators by reviewing plans and specifications prior to project bidding as well as provide required data and documents for material submittals post bid.
  • Drive change within the business to align departmental efforts to promote the production of high quality concrete and exceptional batch accuracy.
  • Monitor inbound raw material quality and consistency. Act quickly to address out of spec materials in order to prevent field concrete failures.
  • Monitor performance of concrete mix designs. Act quickly to address low break reports. Furthermore, maintain program of auditing poor field concrete curing processes.
  • Conducts Employee Performance Evaluations for all direct reports.
  • Member of the Management Team focused on the designated area to establish Company as the market leader and Supplier of Choice
  • Use an entrepreneurial approach to work with ready-mix and other Market Area product groups to help capture optimal value from our vertically integrated supply chain.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by management.


Preferred Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Working knowledge of Command Batch System
Completion of applicable ACI concrete technology courses
Ability to plan and coordinate the activities of others
Strong knowledge of ACI and ASTM standards as well as local specifications
Ability to teach others
Customer service focused to provide solutions to customer requirements
Strong communication skills with customers, senior managers and business owners
Some supervisory experience preferred
Bilingual (Spanish) is beneficial
Must be safety-minded, team-oriented and customer-focused
Detail and technically oriented individual
Ability to read and understand technical plans and specifications
Must be self-motivated with ability to perform duties with minimal supervision
Excellent time management skills; good planning skills; able to multi-task
Excellent oral and written communication skills, Microsoft computer skills
Long hours, weekend and/or night work possible
Able to work in outdoor setting under varying weather conditions

Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree; engineering preferred
Minimum of 5 years industry experience preferred
2+ years supervisory experience preferred

Physical Requirements
Ability to read, write, and verbally communicate in the English language
Ability to sit for extended periods of time (up to 8 hrs.), stand, walk, stoop and bend
Must have manual dexterity to use hand tools, and be able to see and hear
Ability to visually inspect concrete and or its ingredients for acceptance
Ability to walk and stand on uneven or slippery surfaces for an 8 + hours per day
Must be able to operate Company vehicle for a minimum of 8 hours per day including entering and exiting the vehicle frequently
Ability to work minimum 10 hour days, 5 days per week and most Saturdays
Ability to walk on all types of surfaces (uneven and /or slippery ground)
Ability to lift up to 0 lbs. to waist high a multiple times a day
Ability to climb an 8 foot plus ladder multiple times a day
Climb stairs and ladders as high as 60 feet in elevation

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, heat and noise from operating equipment. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; chemicals, risk of electrical shock high, precarious places and enclosed spaces and vibration.
