Job Description
Job Title: Medical Lab Technician
Job Specialty: General Testing
Job Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: Night shift, 20:30 - 07:00, 4x10 schedule
Guaranteed Hours: 40.00
Experience: 9 years of related work experience preferred
License: Must hold an applicable clinical license
Certifications: Medical Laboratory Technician certification from ASCP, AMT, or equivalent required within 6 months of hire
Must-Have:
- Associate degree or completion of a U.S. Military 50-week course leading to a specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist or equivalent
- Bachelor's degree in a science field with applicable clinical experience
Job Description:
- Perform all levels of general testing within the analytical laboratory with a high level of technical knowledge
- Exhibit complex problem-solving skills and function in a self-directed manner
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment and follow laboratory, hospital, and regulatory agency policies, procedures, and guidelines
- Perform cytogenetic testing with competency according to established protocols
- Generate and report results used for accurate diagnoses and prognoses influencing patient care
- Demonstrate knowledge and competency of laboratory computer systems and ensure accurate and timely result reporting
- Utilize critical thinking skills to interpret data and utilize independent judgment
- Compile and review laboratory information system reports to ensure samples are collected, processed, and tested within appropriate timeframes
- Assist with resolution of unusual test orders by coordinating with caregivers, reference labs, or pathology
- Actively participate in new associate and student training and orientation
- Participate in inspections and may be assigned lead responsibilities in various areas
- Attend department, laboratory, and hospital meetings and forums
- Responsible for the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of instruments with appropriate documentation
- Complete required quality control and maintenance, documenting corrective actions
- Receive specimens, assess priority, ensure proper specimen identification, and manage specimen processing
- Prepare samples for off-site testing with accurate documentation and packaging for courier transport
- Act as a steward of finances through appropriate use of supplies and resources
- Recognize and provide input for opportunities to improve productivity, lab workflow, and supply management
- Serve as a liaison with other laboratory departments and hospital services
- Maintain flexibility to respond to workload demands and staffing needs
- Floating may be required to any location within sixty miles of the original assignment and may include duties outside of the original job requirements
