We're hiring a Controller to lead the firm's accounting function, manage a team of five, and partner closely with leadership on strategy and financial planning and strategy. This is a hands-on role in a dynamic environment that requires technical expertise, strong business judgment, and the ability to prioritize effectively and communicate critical financial information to executive stakeholders. The Controller will report to the CFO and work closely with the CEO and broader executive leadership team. The right candidate will possess strong accounting fundamentals and be able to provide exceptional, timely service. The Controller will be expected to make key decisions and challenge, negotiate with, and influence the leadership team.

Job Responsibilities

The Controller will have the following responsibilities:
  • Leadership & Team Management
    • Lead accounting operations across multiple business entities
    • Manage a team of five, including: Accounting Manager, Sr. Staff Accountant, A/R Specialist, Project Coordinator, and Accounting Assistant
    • Maintain internal controls and support ongoing process improvements
  • Financial Reporting & Analysis
    • Oversee all aspects of financial reporting, including month-end close process
    • Report P&L performance to individual Partners
    • Includes ongoing maintenance of project revenues and expense attribution with a high degree of accuracy
    • Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal standards
    • Provide monthly and quarterly financial reports and analysis to executive leadership, and stand ready to report off-cycle when needed
    • Support scenario planning, pricing decisions, and contract review as needed
  • Budgeting, Forecasting, & Planning
    • Lead annual budgeting process and regular reforecasts
    • Track performance against budget and flag major variances
    • Manage cash flow and working capital
    • Contribute to long-term financial planning, including support for the firms' SaaS business line, which is currently in the process of outside capital fundraising and due diligence
  • Audit and Compliance
    • Serve as point of contact for outside CPA firm that conducts annual audit and tax prep.
    • Prepare and coordinate financial reporting per banking agreements
    • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory requirements

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for the Controller position will possess the following:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field
  • Experience: 10+ years of relevant experience, including several years in a leadership role
  • Skills:
    • Strong general ledger, close, intercompany, project accounting, and reporting experience
    • Demonstrated ability to manage people and work effectively with senior leadership
    • Experience in a partner-led environment and an understanding of individual P&L maintenance and reporting
    • Proficiency with Deltek Vision/Vantage Point is required
    • CPA certification preferred
    • Experience in a professional services firm preferred
    • Exposure to SaaS or recurring revenue business models preferred

Location: Washington, DC | In Person

Compensation: $138,435.00 - $$155,349.00 annualized
