Couple & Family Psychologist
Apply NowCompany: Lorenz Clinic
Location: Minneapolis, MN 55407
Description:
Job Type
Full-time
Description
Couples and Family Psychologists are a rare and fragmented group, with only around 100 ABPP board-certified CFP specialists across the nation. This has led to disparate and limited educational and training opportunities for those seeking to hone specialty-level competence or contribute to training with couples, families, and other systems. Specialists are often 'fish out of water' in traditional settings that are mired in reductionist, Cartesian approaches to mental health. Tireless in their advocacy for the systems view and relational intervention, it can be lonely to be surrounded by those focused on creating change on the first-order, not the second. This oftentimes leads Specialists to feel constrained in their efforts at generativity and professionalism, an uninspiring experience that can lead to burnout.
What if there was a place devoted to systemic and relational work with Couples, Families- relationships of all kinds? A place where psychologists with specialty couples or family competence could have scaled impact within their own profession and advance the field itself? What if such a practice had sufficient scale and ballast to support specialty services, training, and research?
Lorenz is on a mission to heal the world one relationship at a time. To become one of the leading family institutes in the country by 2055.
In its first 14 years, Lorenz Clinic sought to be the best clinic in Minnesota, not the biggest. It quickly became a regional leader in clinical services and training, its novel approach to clinician development often emulated by other practices. The clinic was the first Family Psychology specialty clinic in the North and was the first clinic in Minnesota to develop organized Post-Master's Fellowships. It is recognized by many as one of the best post-degree training programs in Minnesota for clinicians looking to employ systemic, relational therapies. Compared to other large clinics regionally, Lorenz has the highest standards and ideals for clinicians and is the most selective in its hiring.
Lorenz's people have diverse backgrounds and experiences. The clinic welcomes an ever-changing, increasingly diverse group of applicants. Clinicians and trainees most often want to be here more than anywhere else because of how inspiring our high ideals are. Although training isn't all Lorenz does, the training center is the font of vitality to the institution at large. The clinic is growing, evolving, and changing on a daily basis.
We think big but act small, locally. The people that pass through Lorenz are the movers and shakers in the regional field, and part of the long-term vision is to be a place with leaders that infuse systems thinking and relational, reflective practice into the mental health field for generations to come. We hope that our contributions to the specialty will be deep and lasting. Our hope is that people will always take great pride in being part of an organization that, for decades, has served a progressive leader in strengthening and healing relationships of all kinds. Through an integrated approach that involves research, training, and the service of others through psychotherapy, Lorenz will deliver superior results and distinctive impact with lasting endurance for the children, adults, families, and couples.
About the Role
Family Psychologists at Lorenz function in leadership positions in the service of the clinic's Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal (BHAG) of developing one of the finest family institutes in the nation. Whether their primary role is that of clinician, researcher, teacher, or supervisor, family psychologists are free to function within their own areas of competence, specialty, or expertise.
Lorenz maintains strong relationships with regional graduate schools in psychology, family therapy, counseling, and social work. The clinic's psychiatry department is an affiliate of the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. Our clinics are embedded on Main Street in communities with traditionally stark access disparities. Our client census is 43% Medicaid, and we have a sliding fee schedule that goes to zero. Our no-show rate is under 10%. We maintain a rich consultation and continued professional development schedule, as they are key to our committee-run, evidence-based Wellness Roadmap. 95% of our clinicians say they would recommend our practice to their colleagues, the chief benefit cited is the quality of the people. We administer confidential, third-party employee engagement surveys via Gallup, and the best employee feedback in 2024-25 has been:
