Caterpillar is seeking an Operation Automation Specialist in Clayton, NC. In this role, you will provide technical expertise necessary to design all aspects of production, costs, quality, compliance to safety guidelines, and environmental requirements for manufacturing.

What you can look forward to in this role:
  • Provide daily Engineering/Technical support to factory operations.
  • Identify operational efficiency opportunities, scope projects, and support project proposal creation
  • Perform technical risk management for equipment performance of assigned projects.
  • Execute and support design, test, manufacture and commissioning of automated factory equipment. Utilize templates or modify PLC programs for control of automated factory equipment.
  • Utilize engineering software to create wiring and assembly drawings
  • Create/modify HMI programs to coincide with project-specific PLC programs.
  • Performs, assists or trains Maintenance and/or factory personnel in preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and testing of equipment.
  • Convert legacy PLC projects to new platforms and validate for accuracy.
  • Required Skills/Abilities:
    Willing and able to sit or stand for prolonged periods.
    Willing and able to lift to 35 lbs.
    Project management experience in dealing with multiple disciplines such as contractors, consultants, engineers, end users, etc.
    Electrical safety knowledge working with a range from 24-480 volts
  • Working knowledge of the following:
    • Installation, troubleshooting, and design of electrical and PLC systems.
    • Use of diagnostic tools including digital multi-meters and oscilloscopes.
    • Reading schematics and blueprints for power control and automation
    • Installation, troubleshooting, design and programming of automated control systems using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC's), Human Machine Interfaces (HMI's), PC controls, and distributed processing.
    • Computer and software troubleshooting
    • PLC & HMI Software Experience


A successful candidate in this role will showcase their skills in:
  • Software Product Technical Knowledge: Knowledge of technical aspects of a software products; ability to design, configure and integrate technical aspects of software products.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Knowledge of technical troubleshooting approaches, tools, and techniques; ability to anticipate, recognize, and resolve technical issues on hardware, software, application, or operation.
  • Knowledge of Robotics: Knowledge of designing, programming, and operating robots for various applications; ability to utilize programming languages and robotics knowledge to automate the necessary operations of the organization.
  • Industrial Automation/Automatic Control: Knowledge of various industrial automatic control systems, processes and methodologies in a manufacturing environment; ability to design, implement and maintain automatic production systems/processes to improve productivity and efficiency, as well as minimize human intervention.
  • Robotics/Computer Controlled Machinery: Knowledge of robotics technologies and computer controlled machinery; ability to implement and operate robotics and computer controlled machinery in an automated manufacturing environment.


Top Candidates for this position may also have:
  • Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or other Technical Degree or equivalent experience
  • Robotics experience (Fanuc & ABB)
  • IT networking, wired and wireless experience
  • PLC and/or software certifications
  • Experience with AGV's and/or autonomous vehicles
  • Experience with automated material handling solutions
  • Experience with fluid carrying systems including pneumatic, hydraulic, refrigerant, etc.

The primary location for this position is Clayton, NC.

Summary Pay Range:
$95,640.00 - $143,520.00
