Job Summary

TYLin Canada is seeking a Lead Bridge Engineer with bridge design experience to serve as a lead bridge design engineer for the local Toronto office.

The Lead Bridge Engineer position requires leadership capabilities and technical expertise in bridge design and structural engineering. The engineering duties include planning and scheduling of engineering work; interaction with local agencies, design-build contractors and other clients; and performing advanced designs. This position will also manage and mentor engineers.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead a team of engineers for delivery of bridge projects.
  • Lead development of designs through all design phases, from conceptual to detailed designs.
  • Lead and perform design and analysis of complex concrete and steel bridge structures.
  • Lead preparation of plans, specifications and cost estimates in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Lead development of quantities and expected construction cost estimates and scopes of work.
  • Develop project schedules and budgets.
  • Coordinate and direct CAD production activities for design production.
  • Supervise and review calculations and designs performed by engineers and EITs.
  • Conduct quality control activities for independent review and checking of structural designs.
  • Provide the design staff with guidance and assistance in projects.
  • Manage and mentor engineers and oversee staff utilization.
  • Supervise, coordinate and review the work of other engineers and designers.
  • Perform Independent Design Check calculations.
  • Interface with Civil Engineers and other disciplines for development of complete project plans and specifications.
  • Project management of multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Develop engineering studies, reports and documentation.
  • Interface with clients for project delivery.
  • Provide assistance with business development and pursuits of projects as needed.
  • Other assignments as needed.


QUALIFICATIONS (INCLUDING EDUCATION and/or JOB EXPERIENCE):
  • Master's degree in structural engineering.
  • 15+ years of experience in bridge and structural engineering.
  • Hold a professional engineering license, in good standing, from the PEO.
  • 10+ years of experience working on MTO and Metrolinx projects.
  • Experience with leading design teams and coaching engineers.
  • Advanced structural engineering and analysis capabilities.
  • Understand and apply the current Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code CAN/CSA S6, AASHTO LRFD Code and related standards to bridge analysis and design.
  • Working knowledge of MTO and OPSS standards.
  • Experience with design of railway bridges is an asset.
  • Proficient in leading technical aspects of bridge projects, writing reports, preparing drawings, specifications, and engineering calculations.
  • Ability to design reinforced concrete, post-tensioned concrete, and steel structures.
  • Ability to develop conceptual and detailed designs.
  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing. Both in French and English languages.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive engineering reports. Must possess communication and interpersonal skills necessary for effective project team collaboration and relationship building.
