Position Purpose and Summary
The Development Officer is responsible for developing, cultivating and expanding relationships with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.'s ("the Sorority") donors. The Development Officer is responsible for coordinating efforts to increase the organization's overall funding base and diversify its charitable revenue streams. The primary responsibility of the Development Officer is to manage donor relationships and develop relationships with new potential donors by providing exceptional service and ensuring long-term collaboration with the Sorority.
The Development Officer will implement and maintain fundraising activities and will oversee the organization's revenue-generating charitable activities - including major gifts, corporate and foundation giving and planned to give - to expand and diversify the donor base to meet the Sorority's ambitious fundraising goals. The Officer will also actively participate in any future plans for special fundraising campaigns, including a planned capital campaign.
The Development Officer will design and implement an annual plan to raise a minimum of $2 million from various sources to include, but not limited to, individuals, families, foundations, corporations, non-profit organizations and government entities.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Development Officer collaborates closely with the Executive Director, CFO and Strategic Partnerships Committee of the Board of Directors. The Development Officer reports to the CFO and does not have any direct reports. The Development Officer serves as a liaison to the Strategic Partnerships Committee and manages a portfolio of major gifts donors and prospects in support of organization-wide operating and programming initiatives. This position also coordinates regularly with the Sorority's 501(c)(3) affiliated organization, Delta Research and Educational Foundation ("DREF"), to implement and maintain an effective overall funding raising plan.
Proactively cultivates and solicits prospect relationships to inspire and engage philanthropic interests and goals.
Manages existing donor relationships, seeking greater opportunities for giving.
Oversees the management of daily development needs for the Sorority, leveraging the expertise of board and staff leadership when needed.
Provides guidance regarding major gifts and other development and fundraising matters.
Participates in community-wide development activities as needed.
Develops innovative strategies and leads the solicitation efforts of all major monetary gifts.
Leads research efforts to identify new prospects to build the donor pipeline.
Collaborates with the Strategic Partnerships Committee to prepare and submit private and other funding proposals.
Works closely with the Executive Director, National Program Planning & Development Chair, Leadership Academy Chair, Social Action Commission Chair and other staff to develop appropriate strategies and priorities for proposal submissions; collects, maintains, analyzes and evaluates anecdotal data from staff and external industry sources to assist with solicitation.
Creates thoughtful and strategic communications, including proposals, impact reports and communication to key donor audiences. Creates, coordinates and executes customized engagement opportunities for current and prospective donors.
Leverages constituent relationships to coordinate donor plans and donor recognition as well as report on progress of activity.
Achieves strong proficiency in the Sorority's donor management software for development functions, including but not limited to queries, reporting, tracking, etc.
Performs other job-related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
Bachelor's degree in business administration, nonprofit management, communications, marketing, journalism or equivalent is preferable.
Minimum of six (6) to eight (8) years of experience in fundraising or philanthropy, preferably connected to the arts and/or education.
Possesses a high level of knowledge and expertise in major gifts and fundraising in general, and at least a mid-level knowledge of planned giving.
A proven history of success in direct cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gifts. Experience driving successful fundraising campaigns.
Demonstrated ability to take primary responsibility for projects and complete them in a timely manner with limited supervision. Proactive, takes initiative and self-motivated.
Effective and persuasive verbal and written communication skills. Strong leadership and negotiation skills.
Ability to articulate a broad vision of the organization to various stakeholders.
Excellent research and analytical skills.
Experience working effectively with diverse populations and leading projects that involve numerous tasks and multiple teams while maintaining a positive attitude.
Proficiency with donor management software and/or CRM platforms, Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
Must be able to travel, and work evenings and weekends, for major events and where staff participation is required.
Relocation assistance is not available. Must reside within a 50-mile radius of National Headquarters within six (6) months of start date.
Proof of comprehensive COVID-19 vaccination required.
Qualifications Considered a Plus
Master's degree in business administration, nonprofit management, communications, marketing, journalism or equivalent.
Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) certification.
