Position Information

Police Information Officer Contract Office of the Chief

Example of Duties:

  • Advises and counsels the Chief of Police and departmental administrators in their public and media relations activities.
    • Devises and recommends optimum communications strategies to address various immediate internal and external communications needs e.g., administrative and criminal investigations, notoriety incidents, matters concerning public awareness, traffic collisions, road closures, department operations etc.
    • Develops testimony for presentation to the City Council or State legislature.
    • Develops media statements, speeches, messages, talking points, and persuasive presentations for the Chief of Police to be used for internal or external communications.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements long-term communication strategies.
    • Develops communication strategies to provide information or updates on administrative and criminal investigations, notoriety incidents, matters concerning public awareness, traffic collisions, road closures, department operations etc.
    • Develops a public relations program to promote and support the mission and direction of the HPD.
    • Develops internal communications policies and strategies for initiatives that support the vision, mission, and direction of the HPD.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience:
  • A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in journalism, communications, or a related field and
  • Five years of professional experience in researching, analyzing, organizing and preparing written information for dissemination to the print and broadcast news media, two of which must have involved planning and conducting the organization's program to disseminate information to the general public regarding its activities.
