Job Summary
The Director, Claims and Risk Management is responsible for strategy development and tactical management of claims handling, risk management, and select insurance programs with a focus on minimizing operational and logistics-related risks while protecting company assets and reputation.

Zone 1: $200,000 - $230,000
This job is also eligible for participation in an Incentive Plan with a target payout based on eligible compensation and corporate/individual performance goal attainment.
Annual Incentive Opportunity: 20% of eligible compensation

Job Summary
The Director, Claims and Risk Management is responsible for strategy development and tactical management of claims handling, risk management, and select insurance programs with a focus on minimizing operational and logistics-related risks while protecting company assets and reputation.
Primary Objectives
- Develop and implement risk mitigation and loss control strategies to proactively reduce the frequency and severity of claims across all business operations.
- Manage and optimize claims handling processes to ensure efficient resolution, cost containment, and trend analysis for proactive risk reduction.
- Conduct transportation and logistics risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities in terminal operations, transportation, and cargo handling.
- Develop, implement, and monitor focused regulatory compliance and internal policy and process initiatives by collaborating with leadership to align with related laws and safety requirements.
- Manage, oversee, and facilitate claims processing for cargo, property, workers' compensation, and other liability claims ensuring timely and cost-effective investigation, resolution, and reporting of all claims.
- Analyze claims data trends to identify root causes and financial impacts. Identify opportunities to mitigate risk and reduce expenses. Recommend measures to reduce claim frequency and severity and participate in their development and implementation.
- Lead negotiations with insurers, legal teams, and third-party claimants to achieve favorable settlements.
- Manage relationships with insurance providers, adjusters, third-party administrators, and legal teams to facilitate efficient and effective claims processing.
- Actively manage a select volume of claims on an ongoing basis to maintain hands-on involvement in daily claims operations and maintain alignment with evolving business needs and emerging industry challenges.
- Conduct risk assessments and recommend risk mitigation strategies for terminal operations, transportation, warehousing, cargo handling and logistics-related activities to reduce liability exposure.
- Monitor compliance with related OSHA, DOT, and other safety and transportation regulations, collaborating with business leaders to monitor adherence to policy and to develop and implement process improvements.
- Collaborate with senior operational leadership teams to ensure internal policies and procedures align with risk mitigation and claims handling best practices.
- Lead the implementation, ongoing maintenance, enhancement, and development of Risk Management Information Systems (RMIS) to support current and future business needs.
- Serve as the subject matter expert and escalation point for complex claims providing guidance and resolution strategies.
- Collaborate with Finance teams and insurance brokers to ensure cost-effective coverage, optimization of insurance portfolios, and proper allocation of expenses.
- Develop, manage, and monitor risk management budgets ensuring resources are effectively allocated to support risk mitigation and claims management efforts.
- Provide regular reports to executive leadership on key risk metrics, claims performance, and ongoing risk management initiatives.
- Identify emerging risks in the transportation and logistics industry and recommend proactive mitigation measures.
- Lead and mentor Risk Management and Claims teams supporting continuous learning and high performance.
- Other duties as assigned.

Education
- Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Business Administration, Logistics or equivalent combination of coursework and experience in directly-related field required
- Master's degree preferred
- Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) preferred
- Professional certifications in Risk Management (ARM, CRM) and/or Claims (AIC,CCP) preferred
- 10+ years' progressively responsible claims management and risk management experience required
- 5+ years' leadership experience required
- Experience in the maritime, trucking, or logistics industry preferred
- Experience with collective bargaining agreements and union employees preferred
- In-depth knowledge of risk management practices, claims resolution, and industry specific operations practices.
- Proven expertise in managing claims in transportation, logistics, and maritime-related industries.
- Strong understanding of insurance programs, including property, liability, cargo, and workers' compensation.
- Excellent negotiation skills with the ability to resolve high-value claims effectively.
- Strong leadership skills with demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts, influence decisions, and lead by example.
- Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills to convey information effectively to a variety of audiences including executives, senior leaders, and external partners.
- Demonstrated ability to identify complex problems, use logic and reasoning to review related information, develop and evaluate options, conclusions, and implement solutions.
- Proficiency with Risk Management Information Systems (RMIS) or other claims database software.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite of tools.
